ANDERSON, S.C. - An early goal by Tera Dolan and two second half
goals by Helena Moore and Krystal Goss was all Anderson University
women's soccer needed en route to a 3-0 shutout over Coker in first
matchup between the schools as South Atlantic Conference members
Saturday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
With the win, the Trojans picked up their first SAC victory and
remain unbeaten within the conference, moving to 1-0-1. Overall, AU
improves to 2-2-1.
"I am encouraged and inspired by our players," head coach Samar
Azem said. "They came out fighting for a conference win today and
with playing four matches in seven days, 10 goals on the week is a
huge improvement from last season. I've raised the bar and asked a
lot of them and they responded as a unit. I give credit to Coker,
they have come a long way and I think they will surprise some teams
this year."
Dolan got Anderson off to a fast start in the opening half when
she headed in a cross from freshman Madison Taylor. The header beat
Coker goalkeeper Lizz Morris to her right, as Dolan recorded her
first goal in the Black and Gold.
As the Trojans went into halftime leading, Moore added her first
collegiate tally at the 52:59 mark when Goss made a solid run into
the Coker box. Her pass found Moore and her shot scooted past
Morris to her left to increase the Anderson lead.
Goss added her own goal in the 83rd minute when a shot by Emily
Perez bounced off of Morris and found Goss inside the box. The
Newry, S.C. native found a wide open net to give AU its final goal
of the match. For Goss, the goal was her second of the season and
18th in her career.
Senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Neipp moved into the conference record
books, as she has tallied 17.4 shutouts throughout her career.
Neipp now sits alone for 10th all-time in SAC history, passing
Whitney Wardrop (2005-06) of Tusculum and Tracy Shurford (1990-93)
of Elon who each carried 17 shutouts for their respective careers.
For the match, Neipp posted nine saves, as most of Coker shots came
from outside Anderson's box.
Keeping the Cobras out of rhythm was a backline led by Taylor,
Corinne Doll and Faith Johannes. AU outshot Coker 18-15 on the
afternoon as Goss led the way with five and Moore and Paige
Gowans-Smith each had four apiece. Not recording a statistic,
senior Olivia Scalzitti controlled the midfield help maintain the
pace of the match.
"Olivia (Scalzitti) stepped up incredibly well and she had a
great game," Azem said. "Paige (Gowans-Smith), Krystal (Goss),
Helena (Moore) and Alaina (Gay) also did well. For them to go along
with the consistency of Faith (Johannes) and Maddie (Taylor) was
great."
The Trojans continue their SAC slate on Wednesday, Sept. 25 as
they head to another conference newcomer in Queens. Kickoff from
Charlotte, N.C. is set for 7:30 p.m.
