ANDERSON, S.C. - Two first half goals by Georgia College set the
match out of reach, as the Anderson University women's soccer team
fell to GC 2-0 Wednesday evening at Trojan Stadium.
With the loss, the Trojans fall to 1-3-1 on the season and drop
their second straight match to Georgia College after losing 1-0 in
Milledgeville a season ago. Georgia College improves to 3-2 as it
opens Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday.
After being outshot 11-2 in the opening half, Anderson managed
to record nine shots in the final 45 minutes to bring the final
count to 12-11 in the category. Senior Krystal Goss fired the most
shots on the team with a match-high four, as the Newry, S.C. native
troubled GC goalkeeper Annie Stephens twice in the second half.
Freshmen Corinne Doll and Madison Taylor each totaled two shots
apiece.
Senior Kaitlyn Neipp suffered her third loss of the season, but
made five saves on the night. Defensively the backline, led by
redshirt sophomore Faith Johannes, limited the Bobcats to just one
shot in the second half.
GC's Liz Franco got the Bobcats on the scoreboard in the seventh
minute when she received a corner from Abby Dalton. Her shot beat
Neipp to her left as GC took the 1-0 lead. With the goal, Franco
became the fifth different Bobcat to score a goal this season.
In the final minute of the second half, Ashley Veilleux became
the first GC player to record multiple scores on the year when she
received a cross from Cayce Hamilton. The insurance goal was all GC
could manage for the rest of the night as Neipp was not troubled in
the second half.
"Georgia College is a very well-coached side and they did well
to take care of the game early," head coach Samar Azem said. "I'm
disappointed with the way we played today. We need to learn how to
come out from the first whistle and play well. We've been doing
well to build and build, but today was a step backwards. We'll look
to recover from this and move forward."
Anderson returns to its South Atlantic Conference slate on
Saturday, Sept. 21 when it hosts conference newcomer Coker. Kickoff
against the Cobras is slated for 1 p.m.
