ANDERSON, S.C. - After going into halftime scoreless, the
Anderson University men's soccer team came alive in the final half,
as the Trojans netted three goals en route to a 3-1 win over
Catawba for their first South Atlantic Conference and fourth
overall victory of the season Saturday afternoon at Trojan
Stadium.
With the victory, Anderson moves to 4-0 on the year and 1-0 in
SAC play, matching its best start since the 2009 season when the
team started the year 5-0. AU also continues its dominance over
Catawba since joining the SAC, moving to 3-0-1 against the
Indians.
After the teams combined for just five shots on goal in the
first half, sophomore Henrique Gazzi found an opening against the
backline and fired a shot off a Benoit Torres cross for the match's
first goal coming in the 48th minute. For Gazzi, the goal was his
second of the season.
The goals continued in the half as freshman Aaron Roberson
collected a bad touch from the Catawba defender and traveled down
the sideline 20 yards before striking a shot past Catawba Indian
goalkeeper Frankie Cardelle. For the day, Roberson led the team in
shots on goal with two after coming off the bench. The goal was
Roberson's second tally of the young season.
The Trojans got their third goal of the afternoon when the ball
bounced around in the Catawba box, eventually finding the feet of
Andre Carle who netted his team-leading fourth goal of the
season.
Catawba recorded a late goal in the 85th minute on a penalty
kick, but the tally was not enough as Anderson closed out the match
and captured the 3-1 win. In the victory, freshman goalkeeper Bo
Haug recorded his third win of the season, making five key stops
for the match. The backline allowed 14 shots, but forced Catawba to
just six shots on goal.
"We had some strong performances today from Henrique Gazzi and
Benoit Torres," head coach John Murphy said. "Once we get to terms
with our high tempo offense and playing together as a unit, it's
going to be a lot of fun to watch. In the meantime, we have some
growing pains but I see a lot of positives."
Anderson returns to its non-conference slate, as the Trojans
head to the Sunshine State on Tuesday when they face-off with
Flagler. Kickoff from St. Augustine is set for 4 p.m.
