ANDERSON, S.C. — The Anderson University (0-0-1, 0-0-0) men's soccer team and Converse University (0-0-1, 0-0-0) finished in a 2-2 draw on Thursday at Spero Financial Field. The Trojans scored both of their goals in the first half, while the Valkyries equalized with one goal in each half.
"Tough one for us, playing a man down for a majority of the game," said head coach
Michael Zion. "I'm proud of the guys for the grit and work they showed to hold on for a draw. We have a lot to improve and we know that. Back to work, regroup and get ready for the next one."
Banks Garrett recorded five saves while facing 13 shots.
Jonas Zethofer notched one goal and had two shots on goal while
Julian Caro Sepulveda added another goal with his single shot on target. Additionally,
Andres Giraldo provided an assist, facilitating one of the team's goals.
The first period started with the Trojans taking an early lead against Converse. Zethofer opened the scoring for Black and Gold in the 15th minute, quickly followed by a second goal from Sepulveda, assisted by Giraldo, in the 18th minute. Converse responded promptly, with Levi Bankirer finding the back of the net off an assist from Alec Antista in the 18th minute, reducing the deficit to 2–1. Anderson's goalkeeper,
Unai Bernal, was issued a red card at the 24th minute, but the home team maintained its narrow lead by the end of the period.
Converse equalized early in the second half with a goal by Jesper Schierholz in the 77th minute, assisted by Jacob Bandel, bringing the score to 2–2. AU's defense was tested throughout the period, with Garrett making crucial saves, including stops against Iker Revuelta in the 48th minute and Jalen Renwick in the 55th minute. Anderson had opportunities to regain the lead, but Zethofer's shot in the 62nd minute was saved by Thiago Ausland. The match concluded with a stalemate as neither team managed to break the deadlock before the final whistle.
Looking ahead, the Trojans will travel to Franklin Springs, Georgia, to face Emmanuel on Sunday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m
