ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson baseball team wrapped up a
five-game homestand with a 7-4 nonconference setback to North
Georgia Wednesday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Anderson fell to 10-26 on the season, while North Georgia
improved to 10-18. The win, coupled with a 3-1 victory in Dahlonega
on March 13, gave the Saints the season sweep over the Trojans.
Both teams recorded 10 hits in the game with the Trojans
committing three errors to the Saints' one. Two of the Trojan's
hits were home runs while Eason Spivey recorded his second home run
of the season for the Saints in the second inning.
Anderson scored single runs in the first, second, fourth and
sixth frames led by Paul Como's 3-for-3 effort at the dish while
North Georgia scored single runs in the second, fifth and eighth
frames and two runs in the seventh and ninth. Como posted his
second homer of the season in the sixth inning, while also adding a
pair of singles and a walk. First baseman Steven Cooper added two
singles, with Brett Cash notching two singles.
Both Kenny Bellavance and Spivey collected two hits in the game
for the Saints, with both of Spivey's resulting in runs crossing
the plate.
With the Trojans up 4-2 heading into the seventh, Derek Hooper
and Tremayne Toorie both scored unearned runs to knot the score.
Hooper took advantage of an error by the Trojans on a failed
pickoff attempt to catch Toorie at second and he scored on a single
by Spivey on the next play.
In the eighth, Devin Gearhart scored an earned run off a single
up the middle by Jeremy McCurry and Bellavance and Travis Naraine
put the finishing touches on the win for North Georgia by scoring
in the ninth. Bellavance capitalized on a passed ball while Naraine
was driven in by a sacrifice fly by Brad Barto.
Redshirt freshman Brandon Agar (4-3) collected his fourth
victory of the season on the mound in two and one-third innings of
work that included recording five strikeouts. Evan Jordan (0-1)
took the loss for the Trojans in just two-thirds of an inning
pitched.
Anderson opens a four-game road swing at Newberry on Friday,
with first-pitch versus the Wolves scheduled for 6 p.m.
