ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson baseball team snapped a three-game
winless streak by defeating nonconference opponent North Greenville
for the second time in less than a week, 10-1, Tuesday night at
Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Eight Trojans recorded at least one hit on the night, as
Anderson improved to 10-25 on the year, and recorded its second win
of the season over North Greenville (11-19) after defeating the
Crusaders 7-4 last Wednesday in Tigerville.
Freshman Steven Cooper recorded a pair of singles and scored
both times, while sophomore Nathan Galliford ripped a second-inning
home run, his fourth of the season, and walked once. Junior Thomas
Goodman added a single and a walk drove in a pair of runs in four
trips to the plate. Senior Tony Price finished with a single and
two RBI.
Freshman left-hander Stephen McKnight (2-3) tossed seven innings
and limited the Crusaders to five hits, while striking out three
and walking one.
The Trojans worked North Greenville starter Stewart Hunt (1-2)
for two runs off four hits in 1 2/3 innings, saddling him with the
loss. Three additional hurlers allowed eight runs off five hits
over the final 6 1/3 frames for the Crusaders.
The offensive output marked the second-largest of the season for
the Trojans and was the most runs scored since AU defeated Augusta
State, 13-2, on Valentine's Day.
Galliford opened the scoring with his homer over the left-field
wall to lead off the second inning, with the Trojans sending eight
batters to the plate. Paul Como followed Galliford's shot with a
double to left and scored on Price's two-out single to left, giving
AU a 2-1 lead after two innings.
The Trojans increased their lead to 5-1 with three runs in the
third by batting around and capitalizing on four walks and an
error.
AU added three more runs in the sixth frame, with Goodman
plating both Cooper and Como with a two-out single to right
field.
The Trojans wrapped up the scoring with two unearned runs in the
seventh inning.
Anderson will look to build momentum as the Trojans play host to
North Georgia on Wednesday, with first-pitch slated for 6 p.m. at
Memorial Stadium.
