ANDERSON, S.C. - Wingate rallied from an early deficit to defeat
Anderson, 6-3, in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday
night at Memorial Stadium.
Anderson (9-23, 4-12 SAC), which entered the contest having won
four of its last five, opened a five-game homestand with the
setback. Wingate improved to 20-12 overall and 12-4 in the
conference with its sixth straight victory.
Sophomore Nathan Galliford was 1-for-3 on the night and added a
walk, while scoring once. Freshman Steven Cooper posted a double
and a walk in four trips to the plate and junior Paul Como added a
three-run double in the first inning. Junior Josh Hickman notched a
double in the seventh inning.
Sophomore JT Trujillo (2-4) absorbed the loss for the Trojans,
surrendering five runs (four earned) in seven complete innings. He
struck out three and walked two. Junior right-hander Ben Currie
earned the complete-game win for the Bulldogs, giving up three
earned runs, while striking out six and walking three.
Wingate took a quick early lead with an unearned run in the top
of the first inning, but the Trojans answered with three runs in
the bottom of the frame. Freshman Chris Ayers ripped a one-out
single to left and moved to second on a wild pitch. Galliford's
single to center field moved Ayers to third and Cooper drew a
two-out walk to load the bases. Como then cleared the bases with
his seventh double of the season to left-center, giving AU a 3-1
lead.
The Bulldogs responded with a run in the second and followed
with two in the third inning to claim a 4-3 lead.
After the second inning, Currie allowed just three hits - all
doubles - over the final seven frames, while Wingate added solo
runs in the seventh and ninth innings to set the final score.
The Trojans and Bulldogs are slated to wrap up their three-game
series with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Memorial Stadium.
First-pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
