Trojans Stumble at North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The Anderson baseball team opened a brief two-game road swing with a 3-1 setback at North Georgia Thursday night at Bob Stein Stadium.

Anderson (5-20) suffered its eighth consecutive setback, while North Georgia improved to 7-12 with its third straight victory.

Freshman Steven Cooper led the Trojans offensively, going 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double. Junior Shawn Delmontagne added a double, while freshman Chris Ayers, junior Paul Como, senior Tony Price and junior Jonathan Zalud each posted a hit on the evening.

Sophomore right-hander Spencer Earle (0-4) absorbed the loss for the Trojans, surrendering three runs (one earned) off five hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. He struck out six and walked four. Blake Gaubert (1-1) earned the win for the Saints, scattering seven hits over seven full innings of work, while giving up one earned run.

The Saints built a 3-0 lead with solo runs in the second, third and fifth innings with Anderson getting on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the eighth inning.

Delmontagne, who entered as a pinch-hitter, led off the inning by doubling down the left-field line and moved to third on Ayers' single through the left side. Two outs later, Delmontagne scored on a wild pitch.

Anderson travels to USC Aiken Thursday night for a 6 p.m. matchup, then opens a three-game South Atlantic Conference series at home with a 6 p.m. contest versus Mars Hill on Friday at Memorial Stadium
