ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University baseball team opened a
three-game South Atlantic Conference series with a 10-3 setback to
Catawba Friday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Anderson slipped to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in the conference,
while Catawba improved to 11-4 overall and 3-4 in the league.
Anderson junior Thomas Goodman was 1-for-3 on the night with his
first home run of the season, while junior Shawn Delmontagne also
blasted his first homer of the season. Sophomore Chris Perez added
a seventh-inning double. Senior Erick Sanderson, Sophomore Nathan
Galliford and junior Josh Hickman also added singles for the
Trojans.
Sophomore JT Trujillo (2-2) suffered the loss for the Trojans,
surrendering eight runs (six earned) over six innings, while
striking out six and walking just one Indian. Junior Will Walls
tossed the final three innings in relief, giving up two unearned
runs, while striking out two and walking a pair of Indians.
Catawba's Garrett Furr was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI,
while Julio Zubillaga also added a pair of hits in five at-bats.
The Indians' Craig Brooks also posted a home run.
Nick Lomascolo (4-1) picked up the win, striking out 11, while
walking just one and giving up three earned runs over seven innings
of work.
Catawba jumped out in front early, scoring three runs in the top
of the first inning and added three more in the third on the
strength of a two-out double and Brooks' two-run homer.
The Indians pushed out to an 8-0 lead with a pair of runs in the
top of the fifth, before Anderson posted solo runs in the fifth,
sixth and seventh innings to trim the deficit to 8-3.
Goodman lifted his fifth-inning homer over the wall in center,
while Delmontagne led off the sixth inning with his round-tripper.
Perez led off the seventh frame with a double to left and crossed
the plate on Jonathan Zalud's sacrifice fly to left field.
The Indians added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to set
the final score.
The Trojans and Indians are scheduled to wrap up their
three-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
