ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson junior Josh Hickman recorded three
hits, including a pair of doubles, and senior Tony Price drove in
four runs, as the Trojans and Coker split a doubleheader in
nonconference baseball action Saturday afternoon at Anderson
Memorial Stadium.
Anderson (1-5) claimed its first win of the season in the
opener, 3-1, behind solid pitching and a two-out rally in the third
inning, while Coker (6-2) capitalized on six Trojan errors to earn
the 8-6 win in the nightcap.
Game #1
Anderson 3, Coker 1
Hickman was a perfect 3-for-3, with two doubles and also scored
twice, while senior Erick Sanderson recorded two singles in three
at-bats and also drove in a run.
Senior Keith Wolf was 2-for-2, with a double for the Cobras,
while Zach Loraine added a pair of singles and reached base three
times.
Sophomore JT Trujillo (1-0) tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed one
unearned run, while scattering four hits. The right-hander struck
out three and did not walk a batter. Junior Kyle Francis struck out
one in two-thirds of an inning in relief, while sophomore Landon
Beck notched his first save of the season by throwing a perfect
seventh inning in relief.
Coker junior left-hander Hunter Ressler took the loss, surrendering
three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, while striking out two and
walking three Trojans.
The Trojans snapped a scoreless tie with a pair of two-out runs
in the third inning, as freshman Chris Ayers led off by getting hit
by a pitch. Two outs later, Hickman's double to left plated Ayers
and Sanderson notched the game-winning RBI by following with a
single to left.
The Cobras responded with an unearned run in the fourth inning,
but AU answered with an insurance run in the fifth frame - again
with two outs. Hickman singled to right and scored on Price's
double to left.
Game #2
Coker 8, Anderson 6
Sophomore Nathan Galliford was 2-for-4, including a double,
scored a run and posted an RBI, while sophomore Ryan Mills notched
two singles in four trips to the plate and drove in a run.
Sanderson was 1-for-3, with a walk and Price drove in three
first-inning runs.
Coker's Hunter Loraine was 2-for-2, while recording two RBI and
also scored twice. The right-handed hurler also earned the win in
relief, surrendering one run off one hit in an inning of
relief.
Francis absorbed the setback, tossing 1 2/3 innings in relief,
while giving up an unearned run and striking out one.
The Trojans rallied from a late two-run deficit to force extra
innings, but were unable to overcome six costly errors that led to
six unearned runs by the Cobras.
After Coker opened the game with a two-run first inning, Anderson
responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning on Price's
bases-loaded double three-run double to right-center.
The Cobras sandwiched a pair of runs in both the third inning
and sixth around a solo run from the Trojans in the fourth and took
a 6-4 edge into the bottom of the seventh inning. AU's Stephen
McKnight led off the rally with a double and Sanderson singled one
out later, putting the tying run on base. McKnight scored and
Sanderson moved into scoring position on a balk and Galliford's
two-out single up the middle plated Sanderson to knot the score at
6-6 and send the contest into extra innings.
Coker capitalized on a pair of Trojan defensive lapses in the
eighth inning and AU was unable to answer in the bottom of the
inning.
Anderson and Coker are slated to wrap up their three-game set
with a single contest Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
