Trojan Drop Home-Opener to Limestone

ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson rallied for five runs over the final two innings, but fell, 9-7, to Limestone in nonconference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Anderson slipped to 0-4 on the young season, while Limestone improved to 2-3.

Sophomore Nathan Galliford led the Trojans at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of singles, while driving in an eighth-inning run and scoring once. Junior Josh Hickman added a pair of singles in five at-bats and also crossed the plate twice. Junior Shawn Delmontagne notched a double and a single while scoring twice, with senior designated-hitter Erick Sanderson recording two singles in five trips to the plate. Junior catcher Ben Pendleton singled once and recorded a team-high three RBI on the afternoon.

Limestone's Chad Balderman was 3-for-5 with three RBI on the strength of a pair of doubles and a single, while Cooper Gunter posted three singles in five trips to the plate. Junior Kyle Rivieria added two hits in four at-bats, with Julian Bridges tallying a pair of hits on the day. Josh Greene was also 2-for-5 on the day and scored a run.

Freshman hurler Stephen McKnight (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs on 10 hits over four innings of work, while striking out a pair of Saints and did not walk a batter.

Limestone sophomore Kalen Earls evened his record at 1-1 on the season, tossing six innings, while giving up two earned runs and issuing one walk.

The Trojans struck first, with Hickman leading off the home half of the opening inning with a single back up the middle and scoring on Sanderson's two-out single to center field.

Limestone answered with a pair of runs in both the second and third innings and took a 5-1 advantage with a solo run in the fourth. Anderson countered with a run in the bottom of the fifth frame on the strength of three singles.

The Saints pushed out to a 9-2 advantage with a four-run sixth before AU responded with a four-run eighth, while sending nine batters to the plate.

Delmontagne and Price opened the Trojans' final at-bat with back-to-back singles, bringing the tying run to the plate. Delmontange moved to third on Galliford's groundout to first and scored on Pendleton's sacrifice fly to center, but Anderson was unable to get any closer.

The Trojans continue their nine-game homestand when Erskine invades Memorial Stadium on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. first-pitch.
