GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Anderson University baseball team opened a
six-game road swing with a 13-6 setback to Limestone in
nonconference action Wednesday afternoon at Bob Prevatte
Field.
Anderson fell to 4-9 with its third consecutive setback, while
Limestone (7-3) won its seventh straight and claimed its second win
of the season past the Trojans, after edging AU, 9-7, earlier this
month at Memorial Stadium.
Junior shortstop Brett Cash stretched his hitting streak to five
games by leading off the game with a single and was 3-for-4 on the
afternoon with three singles and scored twice.
Sophomore Nathan Galliford posted two hits and a walk, while
driving in a pair of runs with a third-inning double. Freshman
Steven Cooper has hit safely in six straight games after going
2-for-5 on the day.
Freshman Stephen McKnight (1-2) absorbed the loss, surrendering
seven earned runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning and walking
three Saints.
The Trojans struck early with a run in the top of the first
inning, when Cash led off the game with a single. He moved into
scoring position when Saints' right-fielder Avi Ahlzadeh misplayed
the ball and went to third on Steven Cooper's groundout to first.
Cash crossed the plate on Erick Sanderson's two-out single to left
field.
But the Saints capitalized on four hits and three walks to
counter with seven runs in the bottom of the frame and added three
more in the second inning to claim a 10-1 lead.
AU countered by scoring a pair of runs in the third on
Galliford's two-out double of the season down the left-field line -
his fifth of the season - that plated Hickman and Sanderson, who
had drawn walks.
Limestone pushed its lead to 11-3 in the bottom of the third
before the Trojans scored twice in the fourth and once in the fifth
to trim the deficit to 11-6. AU threatened again in the sixth,
loading the bases with one out, but the Trojans were unable to
capitalize.
The Saints added solo runs in the bottom of the seventh and
eighth innings to set the final margin.
Anderson will get back on the diamond for a South Atlantic
Conference series this weekend at Tusculum. The opening contest of
the three-game set is scheduled for Fiiday at 6 p.m. in
Greeneville, Tenn.
