ANDERSON, S.C. - Junior Paul Como ripped a one-out single
through the left side of the infield to plate Erick Sanderson from
second base with the winning run, as Anderson defeated Coker, 1-0,
in nonconference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Anderson
Memorial Stadium.
With the win, Anderson (2-6) claimed the weekend series, while
Coker slipped to 6-3 on the season.
In a pitchers' duel that featured nine combined hits, including
just three for extra bases, Como, Sanderson, Ryan Mills and
Jonathan Zalud each recorded singles, while sophomore Chris Perez
notched a lead-off double in the eighth inning for the Trojans.
Sanderson started on the mound for the Trojans and scattered
four hits over seven innings, while striking out seven Cobras and
issuing just two walks. Freshman hurler Mitchell Cooksey tossed 1/3
of an inning and Kyle Francis (1-1) earned the win with 1 2/3
innings of perfect relief while notching one strikeout.
Coker's T.J. Giczkowski and senior Chad Nader each posted a
double, while Brinley Griffen and Frank Suarez each notched a
single.
Senior left-hander Dan Meyer went 8 1/3 innings for the Cobras,
surrendering the one earned run off five hits, while striking out
seven and walking three.
Both teams threatened in the first inning, as Coker's Keith Wolf
drew a one-out walk, moved to second when Griffin singled through
the left side and went to third on Zach Loraine's fly to center.
But Sanderson worked out of the jam and did not allow a runner past
second again until the sixth.
Anderson's Mills singled to left with one out in the bottom of
the first and moved into scoring position on Josh Hickman's walk,
but was stranded at second.
Nathan Galliford was hit by a pitch with one out in the second
frame and moved to second when Como bounced out to second. He went
to third on Zalud's two-out single, but the Trojans were unable to
capitalize.
The Cobras' Giczkowski doubled to left with two out in the
sixth, but was thrown out at the plate by AU shortstop Brett Cash
as he attempted to score when Fico Kondla hit the ball to the left
side. Coker right-fielder Chad Nader doubled with one out in the
seventh inning, but was stranded when Sanderson struck out Shea
Bell and Justin Blechle bounced out to second.
Perex led off the home eighth inning with a double to left, but
was unable to score, as Myer induced the Trojans into back-to-back
flyouts and Hickman was retired on a hard-hit ball that ricocheted
off Meyer's glove and to Giczkowski at third, who made the throw in
time to first.
Francis retired the Cobras in order in the top of the ninth
inning, setting up Como's heroics. Sanderson led off by singling to
right and moved to second on Tony Price's sacrifice bunt. Galliford
reached base on a walk and Como followed with his base hit through
the left side as Sanderson raced home with the lone score of the
afternoon.
Anderson continues its homestand by playing host to Peach Belt
Conference-opponent Augusta State on Wednesday. First-pitch is
scheduled for 3 p.m. versus the Jaguars.
