ANDERSON, S.C. - Led by redshirt sophomore Andre Carle's two
second half goals, Anderson University men's soccer added its
fourth straight win on the season over Newberry, 3-2, Wednesday
evening at Trojan Stadium.
The victory propels the Trojans to 8-2-1 on the season and after
beginning South Atlantic Conference play with a 1-2 record, AU has
notched three straight conference victories to move to 4-2. Also
with the win, the Trojans move to 3-1 at home with their only loss
coming in double overtime.
After a scoreless opening half, Carle got AU on the scoreboard
in the 48th minute when Newberry goalkeeper Patrick Sweatt came out
of the goal and tried to pick up a pass from the backline.
Misjudging where Carle was on the field, Carle used his speed to
corral the ball and got behind Sweatt for the first goal of the
match.
Less than a minute later, the Wolves responded when Tomas Garcia
got on the scoresheet when his shot beat AU goalkeeper Bo Haug to
his right. For Garcia, the tally was his first of the season.
The goals continued thirty seconds later when junior defender
William Treichler used his long throw abilities to toss the ball
into the Newberry zone. Redshirt freshman Benoit Torres was able to
get a touch before graduate student Bernd Muxel beat Sweatt to take
back the lead for Anderson. For Muxel, the tally was his first goal
of his collegiate career after making his fourth start of the
season.
Carle eventually scored the eventual game-winner in the 68th
minute when redshirt freshman Alex Delpy found the striker on a
long lob behind the NC defense. Carle was able to get a few touches
to the ball along the right side and slid a shot into the net for
the 3-1 lead.
Newberry was able to add its second goal in the 88th minute, as
the Wolves tried to conduct a comeback, but the AU defense was able
to preserve the win, moving freshman goalkeeper Bo Haug to 7-2-1 in
his first collegiate season. For the match, Haug recorded two
saves.
Behind Carle's three shots on the evening, Muxel and junior
midfielder Mattias Schyberg posted two shots for the match, while
Delpy and junior Martin Brain each notched a shot on goal.
"Newberry gave an exceptional effort tonight that we didn't
match for most of the match," head coach John Murphy said. "We have
some work to do for Saturday and we'll be back at it Thursday
morning."
Anderson returns to action and SAC play on Saturday, Oct. 12, as
it heads to Lenoir-Rhyne. Kickoff from Hickory, N.C. is slated for
5 p.m.
