ANDERSON, S.C. - Anderson freshman JT Trujillo's stellar
performance on the mound helped lead the Trojan baseball team to a
4-3 South Atlantic Conference win past Newberry Friday night at
Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Anderson (13-30, 6-16 SAC) won its third consecutive contest,
while Newberry fell to 15-25 overall and 9-13 in conference
play.
Trujillo (3-4), a right-hander, scattered six hits and gave up
three runs in 7 2/3 innings of work. He struck out four and issued
just one walk. Fellow freshman Landon Beck worked 1 1/3 innings and
struck out two, earning his second save of the season.
Senior Blake May was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and a walk,
and scored once, while Shawn Delmontagne and Thomas Padro each
posted singles. Brett Cash added a double and scored in the third
inning.
Newberry scored in the top of the first inning to take a quick
1-0 lead, but the Trojans answered with a pair of runs in the
bottom of the third to take a lead they would not relinquish. Padro
notched a one-out single to center and Cash followed with his
seventh double of the season - a shot to left-center - and both
runners scored with two outs.
Anderson boosted its lead to 4-1 in the seventh inning, while
sending eight batters to the plate and scoring twice with two out.
May followed Zach Reeves' two-out walk with a single up the middle
and Reeves crossed the plate on Erick Sanderson's single through
the left side. May crossed the plate with what turned out to be the
winning run when Delmontagne was hit by an errant pitch with the
bases loaded.
The Wolves capitalized on a Trojan miscue to plate two unearned
runs in the top of the eighth and had the tying run on second with
two outs, but Beck recorded his first strikeout of the night to
close the inning and retired the Wolves in order in the ninth to
earn the save.
The Trojans and Wolves will wrap up their three-game series
Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. First-pitch is slated for 1
p.m.
