TIGERVILLE, S.C. - Freshman pitcher JT Trujillo threw seven
strong innings and senior third baseman Blake May was perfect at
the plate, as Anderson wrapped up its four-game road swing with a
4-3 win past North Greenville in non-conference baseball action
Wednesday afternoon at Ashmore Field.
Anderson (7-19) snapped a six-game skid with the win, while
avenging an earlier 10-1 loss to the Crusaders. North Greenville
slipped to 17-7 on the season.
Trujillo (2-3) scattered four singles over seven full innings as
he earned his second win of the season, striking out four and
walking just one. Fellow freshman Landon Beck notched his first
save of the season by working 1 1/3 scoreless innings in
relief.
May posted his sixth multi-hit game of the season by going
2-for-2 at the plate, while driving in three runs and scoring what
proved to be the winning run in the pivotal third inning.
Freshman Zach Reeves got the Trojans on the scoreboard in the
top of the first inning, as the center fielded ripped a one-out
double through the left side, moved to third on a wild pitch and
crossed the plate on May's sacrifice fly to center.
The Trojans increased their lead to 4-0 in the third by taking
advantage of four singles and a walk. Thomas Padro and Brett Cash
led off the inning with back-to-back singles and moved up on
Reeves' sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher.
May followed with a single back up the middle to score both
runners and following a two-out walk to Erick Sanderson, catcher
Brett Scarberry lined a single the opposite way to bring May across
the plate.
Strong pitching reigned for the next four innings, as neither
team was able to push a run across. But the Crusaders broke through
with three runs in the home-half of the eighth, with Beck coming on
in relief of Riley McDermott, who surrendered three runs off four
hits in 2/3 of an inning. With two on and two out, Beck gave up a
run-scoring single but recorded the final out and held the
Crusaders scoreless in the ninth.
The Trojans worked North Greenville starter Allen Staton (0-1) for
four runs off seven hits in six innings, saddling him with the
loss.
Anderson will get back on the diamond Thursday, when the Trojans
visit Augusta State for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup. AU
welcomes South Atlantic Conference-foe Lenoir-Rhyne to Memorial
Stadium for a three-game series, starting on Friday.
