CENTRAL, S.C. - Anderson built an early lead then held off a
late Southern Wesleyan rally for a 4-3 win in non-conference
baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Dr. C. Keith Connor
Field..
Anderson improved to 1-3 with the win, while Southern Wesleyan
slipped to 2-4 on the season with its third consecutive loss.
Anderson's offense got going in the bottom of the second inning,
as Zach Reeves reached base for the first of two times on the
afternoon after getting hit by a pitch with one out. The sophomore
from Greenville moved into scoring position on catcher Brett
Scarberry's 10th hit of the young season - a single to right - and
both scored on Jonathan Romano's first home run of the season,
giving AU an early 3-0 lead.
The Warriors threatened in their half of the inning, but AU
freshman right-hander Spencer Earle worked out of the jam and went
on to hold Southern Wesleyan scoreless over six innings.
The Trojans threatened again in the fourth frame when Romano
laced a two-out double to center, but Anderson was unable to
capitalize.
With one out in the sixth, Reeves singled to left, stole second
and moved to third on an error by the Warriors. Scarberry followed
with a double to left for the game-winning RBI as Reeves crossed
the plate.
The Warriors scored their first run of the contest by taking
advantage of a two-out walk in the seventh by freshman Danny Diaz.
The shortstop scored on junior Thomas Floyd's double to center.
Senior Riley McDermott retired SWU in order in the eighth, but
the Warriors climbed to within a run in their final at-bat with a
two run rally.
Sophomore Joe Boudolf recorded a one-out single and pinch-hitter
Clint Clymer followed with a double down the left-field line to
score Boudolf and one out later Clymer crossed the plate on Floyd's
double to center. But after issuing a walk to Yamil Perez,
McDermott got Tyler Lollis to fly out to center to end the
game.
Romano finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with three RBI, a home run
and a double and Scarberry went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of
singles. Reeves had a single in three at-bats and scored a pair of
runs, while senior Blake May reached base three times on the
afternoon.
Earle held Southern Wesleyan to five hits over six innings,
while striking out one and walking three to earn his first
collegiate victory. McDermott tossed two innings in relief,
surrendering three and two runs en route to earning his first save
of the season.
The Trojans worked Southern Wesleyan starter Matthew Large for
four runs off eight hits in seven innings, saddling him with the
loss. Tim Cummings allowed one hit over the final two frames for
the Warriors.
Anderson will get back on the diamond Wednesday, when the
Trojans visit Conference Carolinas-favorite Limestone. First-pitch
is slated for 2 p.m.
