ANDERSON, S.C. - Led by sophomore catcher Brett Scarberry's
season-high three RBI, the Anderson baseball team outpaced Belmont
Abbey, 5-4, in non-conference action Thursday night at Anderson
Memorial Stadium.

improving to 3-2 on the current 10-game homestand and avenged an
earlier setback to the Crusaders. Belmont Abbey (29-12) suffered
its second consecutive setback, as AU defeated the visitors for the
first time since the 2008 campaign.
Scarberry led the offensive attack, finishing the evening
2-for-3 with a run-scoring double in the fifth inning and a two-run
bases-loaded single in the sixth. First baseman Erick Sanderson
added a pair of hits and scored a run, while junior Jonathan Romano
went t 2-for-4 with two singles and scored once.
Romano provided an early boost for the Trojans, as he led off the
game by beating out an infield single and scored on Sanderson's
two-out double to center field.
The Crusaders took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning
after back-to-back singles to open the inning put runners on first
and second with no outs. Abbey senior Tim Dye then chopped one on
the infield that Anderson senior hurler Ben Roberts gloved, but
threw high past Sanderson at first, allowing both Belmont Abbey
runners to score. Dye later crossed the plate on a groundout to
third.
AU trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth when
junior right-fielder Ryan Kirkland reached on an error and scored
on Scarberry's third double of the season down the right field
line.
The Trojans tacked on three more runs in the sixth by sending
eight batters to the plate. Sanderson, Blake May and Tony Price
recorded three consecutive singles and with two outs, freshman
Shawn Delmontagne drew a walk to load the bases. Scarberry followed
with his two-RBI single tom left, providing the winning margin.
Belmont Abbey climbed within 5-4 with a solo run in the seventh
frame, but senior Justin Rogers came on to record the final two
outs of the inning.
The Crusaders threatened with one out in the ninth, but Rogers
snared Justin Vasquez's line shot back up the middle and doubled
Roberto Sanchez off first to close out the win.
Roberts earned his first win of the season by tossing 6 1/3
innings, while giving up four runs off eight hits. The left-hander
issued three walks and struck out two. Rogers threw the final 2 2/3
innings in relief, surrendering just two hits en route to garnering
his first save.

off six hits in 5 1/3 innings. Senior Joey Kopp allowed one run off
two hits in the final 2 2/3 frames for the Crusaders.
