ANDERSON, S.C. - Paced by sophomore first baseman Erick
Sanderson's perfect night at the plate, the Anderson baseball team
closed out its' 2011 season by defeating North Greenville, 9-4,
Monday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Anderson improved to 20-30 on the year, while snapping North
Greenville's four-game win streak and handed the Crusaders just
their second loss in the last 11 games. NGU slipped to 27-11 with
the setback.
Sanderson was 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and three runs
scored to spark the Trojans' offense. The Hanahan, S.C., native
notched a single, double and a triple on the night, while shortstop
Thomas Padro added a single and a triple and scored twice. Junior
right-fielder Ryan Kirkland also finished 2-for-4 on the night,
with a double and an RBI.
North Greenville posted a solo run in the top of the third
inning to take a brief lead, but Anderson's bats woke up in the
fourth frame, as Padro led off with a triple down the right-field
line and Saxon followed with the first of his two walks on the
night. Sanderson pulled a double down the right-field line to score
Padro and even the score, while Blake May followed with a bounce
out to first to bring home Saxon. The designated hitter, Tony
Price, also went to the right side of the infield to score
Sanderson to give AU a 3-1 advantage.
Anderson added a pair of runs in the sixth and after NGU
answered with a pair of runs to trim the lead to 5-3, the Trojans
batted around, scoring four runs with two out to put the game out
of reach.
The Crusaders plated a solo run in the final inning, but could
get no closer.
Senior left-hander Ben Roberts, one of seven Anderson hurlers on
the night, earned his second win of the season after tossing two
innings of one-hit, one-run relief.
The Trojans worked North Greenville starter Justin Turner for
three runs off four hits in five innings, saddling him with the
loss. Three additional Crusader pitchers allowed six runs off seven
hits over the final three frames for North Greenville.
