NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Anderson baseball team closed out its'
South Atlantic Conference slate by splitting a road doubleheader
with Newberry College, dropping the opener, 15-4, and winning the
nightcap, 9-8, at the Smith Road Complex.
With the split, Anderson moved to 19-30 overall and 10-17 in the
conference, but narrowly missed qualifying for next week's league
tourney, while Newberry finished 22-25 and 15-12 league record,
which placed them sixth in the league.
Game One: Newberry 15, Anderson 4
The Wolves jumped out to a lead in the first inning and never
looked back on the way to a 15-4 victory which clinched a series
win.
The Newberry defense work out of a jam in the top of the inning
and scored four in the bottom of the first. Kevin Rufus was hit by
a pitch and John Fogarile hit a single after that. An RBI-single by
Evan Darr put the first run on the board followed by an RBI bunt
single by Andy Vogel (Marietta, Ga.), and the Wolves extended the
lead.
In the second, an RBI single by Anderson's Brett Scarberry
followed by a two-run homer by Bobby Roper cut the lead to 4-3.
Newberry pushed the lead out to 5-3 in the third when Vogel hit a
home run just over the wall in left field.
Darr and Vogel led off the fifth with singles and an RBI single
by Jovan Rohena , a sacrifice fly by Patrick Regalado and an RBI
double by Rufus made it 8-3. A Bley RBI single in the sixth pushed
the lead to six runs.
The Wolves tacked on six runs in the eighth inning on an RBI
single by Darr, an RBI double by Vogel, RBI singles from Regalado
and Terrence Gray and a two-run double by Keke Wadsworth to make it
15-3.
The Trojans scored an unearned run in the top of the ninth, but
could get no closer.
Chauncey Mattei pitched three innings of one-hit scoreless
relief to earn the while Brett Campbell suffered the loss for
AU.
Game Two: Anderson 9, Newberry 8
The Trojans broke a tie with three runs in the top of the
seventh and a Newberry rally in the bottom of the seventh fell
short.
AU's Ryan Saxon started the scoring with a first inning RBI
single, but Rufus led off the bottom half with a triple and tied
the game when he scored on a wild pitch. Anderson reclaimed the
lead in the second with a sacrifice fly by Troy Ambros and an RBI
single by Jonathan Romano to make it 3-1. Gray hit an RBI single in
the bottom of the second and Love gave the Wolves a 4-3 lead in the
third with a two-run homer.
An unearned run in the top of the fourth for AU tied the game,
but Fogarile and Love responded with RBI singles in the bottom of
the inning to make it 6-4. However, Saxon and Erick Sanderson led
off the fifth with back-to-back homers to tie the game again.
After a scoreless sixth, the Trojans unleashed three straight
RBI singles with two out in the top of the seventh to make it
9-6.
Love led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, followed
by a pinch-hit single from Zach Upton. A Vogel RBI single and RBI
sacrifice bunt by Rohena brought Newberry within a run, and the
winning run got on base with one out via a walk by Sanchez Gartman.
But Riley McDermott retired the final two Wolves' hitters on a
flyout and a groundout to leave those runners stranded.
McDermott worked three full innings of relief for the win, while
Nate Elder absorbed the loss for Newberry.
