Trojans Stumble at Home to North Greenville

Box score

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson baseball team dropped a 10-5 decision to visiting North Greenville in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium.

Anderson slipped to 9-10 on the season as the Trojans suffered their fifth consecutive setback and dropped just their second home contest of the season. North Greenville improved to 12-6 while winning its seventh straight contest.

The Trojans won the earlier matchup this season by a 5-1 count and jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning when Erick Sanderson ripped a two-out triple off the left-centerfield wall to plate Ryan Kirkland and Thomas Padro.

The Crusaders evened the score with two runs in the top of the second, but AU regained a brief 4-2 advantage in the bottom of the frame when Brett Scarberry laced a one-out single to left-center and freshman Shawn Delmontagne followed with a run-scoring double to right-center. Delmontagne moved to third on Kirkland's fly to right and crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

North Greenville posted another pair of runs in the third and added three in both the fourth and sixth innings to take a 10-4 advantage. Delmontagne scored his second run of the afternoon to pull AU within five, but the Trojans would get no closer.

Delmontagne finished the afternoon 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, as Sanderson added two hits and two RBI.

North Greenville hurler Mike Benjamin tossed five innings to earn the win. The two teams will meet again to close out the season series on April 18.

Anderson jumps back into South Atlantic Conference action when Lincoln Memorial invades Memorial Stadium for a three-game weekend series. First-pitch for the Friday afternoon contest is slated for 4 p.m.
