ANDERSON, S.C. - Four Trojan pitchers combined to limit Southern
Wesleyan to six hits as the Anderson University baseball team
opened a four-game homestand with a 3-1 win past Southern Wesleyan
Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Anderson (3-3) claimed its second win in as many days and
improved to 2-0 at home, while Southern Wesleyan fell to 1-3 on the
season.
Senior right-hander Kaleb Davis got the start on the mound for
the Trojans, hurling four full innings for the win, while Elliott
Tolley, Riley McDermott and Jacob Saxon combined to toss five
innings of scoreless, two-hit baseball.
Senior second baseman Ryan Saxon, junior Ryan Kirkland and
sophomore Tripp Ross led the way offensively for Anderson, as each
posted two hits on the afternoon. Saxon reached base four times,
including two doubles and was hit by an errant pitch in the seventh
inning.
The Trojans opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second
inning, as Saxon led off the frame by ripping the first of his two
doubles to center field and moved to third on a passed ball. One
out later, Kirkland singled through the left side for an RBI, moved
into scoring position on another passed ball and scored what turned
out to be the game-winning run on Ross' single back up the
middle.
Southern Wesleyan countered with a solo run in the third when
catcher Luke Sawyer singled to left and scored on Will Henderson's
double to left. Henderson was thrown out trying to stretch his
two-bagger into a triple as the relay came from Shawn Delmontagne
in left to the cut-off man Padro at short and on to Blake May at
third, erasing the threat.
The Warriors led off the fifth inning with back-to-back walks,
but Tolley regained his control and retired the next three batters
to close out the inning, while Anderson notched its final run of
the afternoon in the bottom of the inning. Thomas Padro blasted his
second double of the season down the right-field line with one out
and crossed the plate when the SWU third baseman was unable to
corral Saxon's line drive just inside the bag.
Southern Wesleyan again got its first two runners on base in the
sixth, but the right-handed McDermott came on in relief and retired
the next three Warrior batters - two on pop-ups in foul
territory.
Saxon turned in the defensive gem of the game with one out in
the eighth, when he robbed SWU's Carey Rowland of a sure single up
the middle. The 5-foot-8 second baseman made a diving stop in the
hole and threw from his knees to record the second out of the
inning.
Anderson opens a three-game weekend series by playing host to
Coker College on Saturday with a doubleheader slated to begin at 1
p.m. at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
