ANDERSON, S.C. - Coker sophomore right-hander Tyler Witzel
scattered four hits while tossing a complete game as the Cobras
slipped past Anderson, 3-1, in non-conference baseball action
Sunday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Anderson dropped to 5-4 on the season with the setback, while
Coker improved to 2-4 overall.
Just a day after posting 24 runs off nearly as many hits in a
doubleheader sweep of the Cobras, the Trojans were able to push
across just a solo run in the third inning. Center fielder Jonathan
Romano led off the frame with a single to left and moved into
scoring position when Cobra left fielder Dyson Coker was unable to
come up with the ball cleanly. Romano moved to third on Thomas
Padro's bounce out to short and scored when Blake May lifted a fly
ball to right field, giving AU a brief 1-0 advantage.
Coker answered with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, as
shortstop Daniel Hiatt and senior Nick Fuoco drew back-to-back
one-out walks and both came across the plate to give the Cobras a
2-1 lead. AU senior hurler Marsh Kowalski came on in relief with
two outs and the bases loaded and struck out sophomore Chad Nader
to end the threat.
The Trojans threatened in the fifth, with Padro and May reaching
base on back-to-back one out singles, but Witzel worked out of the
jam to preserve the one-run edge.
Coker played small-ball to add an insurance run in the seventh
by taking advantage of a lead-off walk and a double to boost the
lead to 3-1 and the Trojan bats went silent over the final three
innings.
Witzel struck out nine AU batters and walked four en route to
the complete game effort, while Brett Campbell (1-1) went 3 2/3
innings and surrendered two earned runs and walked four batters to
absorb the setback.
Anderson gets back on the diamond with a road matchup at rival
Erskine on Wednesday afternoon in Due West. First-pitch is
scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
