HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Paced by a complete game from hurler David
Richardson in the nightcap, the Anderson baseball team split a
Conference Carolinas' doubleheader with Coker Friday afternoon at
Tom J. New Field. With both teams battling to secure a berth in
next month's six-team conference tournament, Anderson dropped a
heartbreaking 6-5 decision in the opener, as Coker pushed a run
across in the bottom of the ninth to take game one of the series.
Anderson (14-27, 8-11 Conference Carolinas) entered the twinbill
holding the sixth spot, with Coker (19-19, 9-14 Conference
Carolinas) sitting in seventh. The nightcap saw Anderson score
first, plating a run in the first. Then after two scoreless frames,
both teams exchanged runs in the fourth to give Anderson a narrow
2-1 lead. The Trojans gave themselves an insurance run in the sixth
to make it 3-1. Coker tried to rally in the seventh, but was unable
to get anything going. David Richardson (3-1) got the win for the
Trojans, going all seven innings, allowing one run on six hits,
while Matt Long took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits
with two strikeouts in seven innings of work. Anderson's Tony Price
had a pair of doubles with an RBI, while Blake May also had a
double. Saxon and Luke Sawyer both had an RBI apiece as well. The
Trojans scored first in game one, posting four runs in the second
inning, but Coker answered with three runs of their own in the
bottom half of the inning. Coker then evened the game at four
apiece with a run in the third. The Trojans scored another run in
the fourth to take the 5-4 lead, but Coker tied the game again with
a run in the sixth. The game remained tied through the seventh and
eighth innings, and into the bottom of the ninth. Brian Luchsinger
led off the Coker ninth with a triple and Anderson loaded the bases
with a pair of intentional walks to bring Matthew Kearnes to the
plate with bases loaded and no outs. Kearnes came through in the
clutch with a high chopper through between third and short that
brought Luchsinger home for a 6-5 Cobra win. Tyler Witzel went the
distance for the Cobras to earn the win. He allowed five runs on 12
hits in nine innings of work with a strikeout. For Anderson, B.J.
Scarborough took the loss, coming on in the ninth, allowing one run
on one hit with two outs. For Anderson, Derek Hipp, Chance Thomas,
Ryan Saxon, Ryan Kirkland and Erick Sanderson each had two hits for
Anderson, with Thomas driving in two runs and Hipp driving in one
run. The Trojans and Cobras close out the three-game series with a
single contest Saturday afternoon, with first-pitch slated for 1
p.m. Game
