Anderson Defeats Barton; Takes Series

ANDERSON, S.C. -- A three-run seventh-inning rally lifted the Anderson baseball team past Barton, 8-5, in Conference Carolinas' baseball action Sunday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. Anderson improved to 8-14 overall and 4-7 in conference play, while the Bulldogs fell to 9-8 overall and 4-5 in league action. The first three innings were a pitcher's duel, with the teams combining for six hits through the first three frames. Anderson starter David Richardson worked out of a one-out bases-loaded jam in the second inning after surrendering back-to-back singles, followed by a fielders' choice and another single. The senior right-handed hurler induced Barton shortstop Chris Rawlings and second baseman Ryan McCleney both to fly out to AU's Jonathan Romano in left field to end the Bulldog threat. Barton got on the scoreboard with three runs in the fourth, sending eight hitters to the plate. Freshman Phillip Williams led off the inning with a single back up the middle and came around to score the game's first run three batters later when Rawlings singled to left. The Bulldogs added two more on a fielders' choice and a two-out single by designated hitter Aaron Watkins. The Trojan bats came alive in the fifth as AU rallied to tie the score at three. Romano led off the frame by ripping a double to left-center and shortstop Thomas Padro followed one out later by drawing a walk. With runners at first and second, senior Derek Hipp came through with a triple into the gap between center and right to plate both runners. Sophomore Ryan Kirkland recorded an RBI when he bounced to McCleney at second to score Hipp and tie the score. After Barton added two runs in the sixth, the Trojans countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, as Trent Still led off with his third home run of the season. One out later, Romano recorded his second double in as many innings and came around to score on Brett Scarberry's triple to right center. The Trojans took the lead for good in the seventh when Kirkland drew a lead-off walk and scored what turned out to be the winning run. Anderson added two insurance runs later in the inning after Saxon singled through the left side and Still worked for a walk and eventually scored. Freshman right-hander Erick Sanderson picked up his second win of the season after working four full innings of relief and scattering five hits while surrendering just two runs. Anderson will get back on the diamond Tuesday, when the Trojans welcome Carson-Newman to Memorial Stadium for a 4 p.m. first-pitch. Box Score Season Statistics
