ANDERSON, S.C. -- Using a pair of four-run outbursts in the
middle innings, the Anderson baseball team snapped a 10-game skid
by outpacing Barton, 11-9, in the opening game of a twinbill, but
dropped the nightcap, 14-0, to the visiting Bulldogs in Conference
Carolinas action Saturday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium.
Anderson (7-14, 3-7 Conference Carolinas), jumped on top early with
an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, courtesy of a
hit batsman, two walks and a passed ball. With one out, Ryan
Kirkland was hit by a pitch and after Matt Hill and Ryan Saxon drew
back-to-to back walks to load the bases, Kirkland crossed the plate
when the ball got past the Bulldog's catcher. After going down
1-2-3 in the first, Barton (9-7, 4-4 CC) recorded four consecutive
hits to open the second and went on to pos three runs before
Anderson escaped further touble with an inning-ending double play
turned by AU's Hill. Following a scoreless third, the Trojans
exploded for four runs in the fourth and another four in the sixth
to open a 9-5 lead. AU sent nine batters to the plate in the
fourth, notching six hits - all singles. The Bulldogs plated a pair
of runs in the top of the sixth, but Anderson countered with their
second four-run outburst, as 10 batters went to the plate with
shortstop Thomas Padro leading off the inning with a double and
scoring three batters later when Hill was hit by a pitch. Each team
added a pair of runs in the seventh and Barton posted solo runs in
the eighth and ninth innings, but would bet no closer as Anderson
claimed the win. Brady Peele picked up the win after going six full
innings, while Kramer Sneed took the loss for the Bulldogs. But
after the offensive surge in game one, the Trojans' bats fell
silent in the nightcap, managing to get four runners in scoring
position but were unable to capitalize and suffered the shutout.
The Trojans and Bulldogs wrap up their three-game set with a single
game at Memorial Stadium on Sunday. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m.
