ANDERSON, S.C. -- Behind a masterful four-hit complete-game
shutout from left-hander Ben Roberts, the Anderson baseball team
blanked Southern Wesleyan, 6-0, in non-conference play Thursday
night at Anderson Memorial Stadium. In their first home game in
more than two weeks, the Trojans needed a lift from their pitching
staff and Roberts tossed a gem as the 5-foot-8 junior scattered
just four hits, none over the final five frames, as Anderson
(11-22) opened a four-game homestand. After enduring a 30-minute
rain delay, the contest was a pitcher's duel through three innings,
with the two hurlers combining to surrender just a combined five
hits through the opening frames. Anderson used "small-ball" to
break the scoreless tie in the fourth, as Ryan Kirkland led off
with the first of two singles on the night and sophomore Jonathan
Romano laid down a one-out sacrifice bunt that moved the
first-baseman into scoring position. Freshman catcher Brett
Scarberry followed with a clutch two-out single by lifting the ball
into left field for his 20th RBI of the season that plated Kirkland
from second. Buoyed by the lead, Roberts settled into a rhythm on
the mound and the Trojans' defense stepped up, allowing just one
runner past second base the rest of the night. Anderson claimed a
3-0 advantage in the sixth when Kirkland and Eric Sanderson
recorded back-to-back singles. Kirkland led off with the hit to
left and moved to second when the SWU left-fielder had trouble
corralling the ball on the wet surface. Sanderson followed by
ripping a pitch through the left side and as he stole second, the
catcher's throw went through to center field, allowing Kirkland to
cross the plate with an insurance run. With two outs, shortstop
Thomas Padro blasted his second triple of the season to the wall in
right center to score Sanderson. The Trojans broke the contest open
with three runs in the seventh, as the first four batters reached
base safely. Matt Hill drew a lead-off walk and following a wild
pitch, pinch-runner Tony Price came around to score on a single off
the bat of Blake May. Ryan Saxon was hit by a pitch and Kirkland
reached base for the third of four times on the night with a walk
to load the bases with no one out. With one out Romano laced a
single back up the middle for the other two RBI. Roberts recorded
the third complete game of the season for AU and the first complete
game shutout of the season as the Trojans snapped a brief two-game
skid, while handing Southern Wesleyan (3-22) its ninth consecutive
setback. May, Kirkland, Sanderson and Padro each finished the night
with two hits, while Kirkland also collected two walks and scored
three runs. Romano drove in two of AU's six runs. Anderson opens a
crucial three-game Conference Carolinas series versus Limestone,
beginning with a noon doubleheader on Saturday at Memorial Stadium
and wraps up the series with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday. Box Score Season
