ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson baseball team returned home
following a disappointing four-game road swing against
nationally-ranked opponents looking to get back on the winning
track, but fell, 16-7, to North Georgia College and State
University Tuesday afternoon at Anderson Memorial Stadium. North
Georgia (7-4) jumped on top early with a run in the top of the
first, but Anderson (6-8) evened the score with a solo run in the
bottom of the second frame when designated hitter Ryan Saxon led
off the inning with a single to right, and came around to score
courtesy of two errors by the Saints' defense. But North Georgia
responded with five runs in its next at-bat, with four of the
scores unearned and sent nine batters to the plate and added three
more runs in the fourth to take a 9-1 advantage before Saxon led
off the fourth by blasting his second home run of the season over
the center field wall. The Saints notched solo runs in the fifth
and sixth, and put the contest out of reach with a three-run
seventh, opening a 14-2 lead. The Trojans rallied for four runs in
the bottom of the eighth and one in the ninth, but couldn't
overcome the deficit. Anderson batted through the order as the
Trojans saw three Saints' hurlers come to the mound in relief of
starter Michael Patton. With Saxon on second and Blake May on
first, Jonathan Romano ripped his second homer of the season to
left-center to account for three of the four scores. Catcher Brett
Scarberry followed with a single to center and scored two batters
later on Derek Hipp's double to the gap in left-center. With the
bases loaded and one down, senior Matt Hill laced a shot back up
the middle that the North Georgia snared, threw home for the force
out and the catcher threw down to first for the inning-ending
double play. The ninth frame saw AU tack on another run courtesy of
heads-up base running by senior Trent Still, as the first baseman
led off with a walk and one out later May reached base for the
fourth time of the afternoon by hitting the ball back up the middle
and as the ball hit the second-base bag and both Saints' infielders
dove for the ball, Still never broke stride, reaching third safely
and scored as Romano hit into a fielder's choice. Anderson has a
one-day layoff before getting back on the diamond Thursday at Mars
Hill College, with first-pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Box Score Season
