Trojans Top Lions 16-5

Anderson, S.C.- The Anderson women's lacrosse team closed out its nonconference schedule with a win against the Lions from Emmanuel Tuesday night at Spero Financial Field. A solid defensive effort and balanced scoring from the Trojans led to a 16-5 victory for the black and gold.

Anderson had five players score while causing 15 turnovers and holding the Lions to just one goal per quarter for the first three periods. The game reached a running clock less than a minute into the fourth quarter when the Trojans extended the lead to 10 and maintained control until the final buzzer.

First Quarter

The Trojans scored first just under 11 minutes into the game with a goal by Laine Stanton unassisted. Alicia Cannon scored about a minute later before Stanton netted her second goal of the game. Justine Dorelas then scored off a free position shot to put the Lions on the board. Hannah Thomas, Cassidy Jones, and Gwen Ontiveros scored one goal apiece putting the Trojans up 6-1 at the end of the first.

Second Quarter

Dorelas opened the second period with another free position goal for the Lions before Hannah Thomas connected on a goal off an assist from Cassidy Jones. The next two goals from Anderson were scored man-down coming from Hannah Thomas and Alicia Cannon. The Trojans headed into halftime with a 9-2 lead over the Lions.

Third Quarter

The second half started with a goal from Emmanuel's Anna Gill less than a minute into play. Cassidy Jones answered with a goal assisted by Alicia Cannon to put the Trojans up 10-3. Laine Stanton and Gwen Ontiveros finished out the period, each scoring a man-up goal for the black and gold.

Fourth Quarter

Gwen Ontiveros opened the final period with a man-up goal off an assist from Lili Bouwma. This goal extended the Trojan lead to 10, resulting in a running game clock. Laine Stanton scored her fourth goal of the night off an assist from Megan Cann before Anna Gill netted her second for Emmanuel. Hannah Thomas scored her fourth and final goal of the night off an assist from Stanton before Gill scored the fifth and final goal for the Lions. After three shot attempts from Anderson as the clock was winding down, Stanton connected unassisted with less than a minute to play.
