ANDERSON, S.C. - Two home runs lifted the Anderson University
softball team to an 4-1 win in game one, but the Trojans dropped
the second game of a non-conference doubleheader, 4-3, to Young
Harris, Wednesday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex.
Anderson (16-4) saw its win streak halted at 13 games with the
split. Young Harris moved to 13-5 overall on the season.
Game #1
Anderson 4, Young Harris 1
Sophomore Rachel Barefield opened the scoring up with a two-run
shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the second inning.
Freshman left fielder Madison Bivins was 2-for3 in the opener, with
her third homer of the season, a solo bomb over the left field
fence in the fourth inning. Sophomore Cailah Niles went 2-for-2
with a single to left, an RBI double and a walk.
The Trojans jumped out to 3-0 lead while holding the Mountain
Lions scoreless through four. In the top half of the fifth, Young
Harris took advantage of two walks and two errors to push its first
run across of the game. Anderson answered back in the bottom of the
fifth with one run when freshman Kasey Grant led the inning off
with a single to left field. Hurtado's ground out moved Grant to
second with Grant scoring on Niles' double down the left field line
setting the final score of the game at 4-1.
Junior Lauren Rudesheim (8-2) pitched five innings scattering
five hits and striking out three to earn her eighth win of the
season. Fellow classmate Augie Pena picked up her third save of the
year pitching two inning in relief. Pena allowed one hit while
striking out five.
Game #2
Young Harris 4, Anderson 3
Bivins and Pena led the Black and Gold at the plate in the nightcap
with two hits apiece. Sophomore Niles drilled her fourth home run
of the year while drawing two walks in game two.
Pena absorbed the setback after entering the game tied in the
seventh inning. Pena walked the first batter she faced while the
second batter hit a RBI double to put the Mountain Lions ahead 4-3.
The junior hurler settled down and struck out two of the next four
batters she faced to end the inning.
Anderson scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the
fifth on a bases loaded walk taken by freshman Kasey Grant. Young
Harris worked out of the jam stranding three of the 13 Trojan
runners for the game. Young Harris answered the Black and Gold back
in the top of the sixth scoring three runs on three hits for a 3-1
lead.
Anderson's Molly Child led the bottom of the sixth off with a
single up the middle followed by Niles' two-run blast knotted the
game up at three. The Mountain Lions scored one in the top-half of
the seventh inning to put them ahead 4-3. Pinch-hitter Trudi Shuman
tried to keep the Trojans alive in the bottom half of the seventh
inning by hitting a single down the line, but the Trojans went down
in order.
Sophomore Randee Bettis got the nod in game two pitching a six
inning no-decision while giving up five hits and striking out
six.
Young Harris' Darby Stanford improves to an impressive 10-1 on
the season.
Anderson will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 12, when it
hosts Conference Carolina opponent Barton. First-pitch at the AU
Softball Complex is slated for 2 p.m.
