ANDERSON, S.C. - Paced by a 23-hit attack, the Anderson University
Softball team swept nonconference opponent Johnson C. Smith, 12-1
and 10-1, Sunday afternoon to end its 16-game homestand for the
Black and Gold at the AU Softball Complex.
The Trojans improve to 19-5 on the season, while Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association member Johnson C. Smith fell
to 1-7 on the year.
Game #1 (5 innings)
Anderson 12, Johnson C. Smith 1
Anderson sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the
first inning, scoring eight of its 12 runs in the first frame.
Leadoff batter Carli Hurtado went 3-for-4 at the plate with two
singles and a triple. Freshman Kasey Grant went 2-for-2 while
recording her first career home run as Trojan. Junior Courtney
Czentnar drove in four Trojans while crushing her third home run of
the season. Sophomore Allison Oxner collected one hit on two
at-bats with one run scored for the Black and Gold while freshman
Virginia Moore went 1-for-1, beating out an infield hit to the
shortstop. Freshman Michaela Smith got in on the action by knocking
in one run on a sacrifice fly and ripping a ball up the middle to
keep things going in the second inning.
Anderson's Randee Bettis (3-1) picked up her third win of the
season, giving up only four hits while striking out six.
Game #2 (5 innings)
Anderson 10, Johnson C. Smith
The Trojans took advantage of seven free passes and 10 hits to
defeat the Golden Bulls 10-1 in game two of the doubleheader.
Sophomore Cailah Niles opened things up in the bottom of the
second by hitting her fifth home run of the season knocking in
three runs to take an early 6-0 lead. Senior Molly Child added two
hits to the total while plating two Trojans of her own. Junior
Lauren Rudesheim picked up two singles and scored one run in her
three plate appearances.
Anderson's Rudesheim (10-2) won her 10th game of the year
pitching a complete game victory. Rudesheim gave up only three hits
and recorded five strikeouts for the Black and Gold.
Anderson heads due west on Monday to face off with nonconference
rival Erskine College from Conference Carolinas. First pitch is
slated for 2:30 p.m.
