ANDERSON, S.C. - Stellar pitching and timely hitting lifted the
Anderson softball team to a doubleheader sweep, 3-1 and 8-0, past
visiting Southern Wesleyan Thursday evening at the AU Softball
Complex.
Anderson improved to 3-1 while Southern Wesleyan falls to 0-2.
Three Trojan hurlers combined to shut down the Southern Wesleyan
offense, holding the Warriors to four hits and one earned run while
striking out 12 batters. The Black and Gold offense was able to
produce enough runs by stringing together hits and capitalizing on
13 Warrior walks.
Game #1
Anderson 3, Southern Wesleyan 1
Freshman left fielder Madison Bivins got the Trojans going in the
bottom half of the second inning with a lead-off single up the
middle, moving to second on a steal. Rachael Barefield recorded the
first out of the inning bringing Michaela Smith to the plate. Smith
was hit by a pitch followed by freshman Kasey Grant's line out to
center field setting up Carli Hurtado's infield single to load the
bases. Trojan center fielder Molly Child drew a two out walk to
score Bivins, earning an RBI.
The Trojans pushed another run across in the bottom of the
fourth, capitalizing on three Warrior walks in the inning. Grant
added a single to the mix and ultimately scored what proved to be
the winning run.
Junior pitcher Lauren Rudesheim pitched a solid game only giving
up one hit, striking out five in five innings of work. Rudesheim
evens her record at 1-1 on the season.
Southern Wesleyan got on the board in the top of the sixth on an
RBI double by Allison Barbee off of Augie Pena who was pitching in
relief. Pena retired the next five batters, striking out four. The
Trojan hurler earned her first save of the season.
Game #2
Anderson 8, Southern Wesleyan 0 (5 innings)
The Black and Gold's bats loosened up in the second game while
pitcher Randee Bettis tossed a one-hitter in her first complete
game as a Trojan. Bettis kept the Warriors batters off balance with
only four balls reaching the outfield. The lone hit by Southern
Wesleyan came in the top of the fifth by first baseman Ashleigh
Wilbur.
Anderson scored five runs in the first two innings highlighted
with three doubles, two by Pena. Child's double inked two of her
three RBI for the game. Sophomore short stop Hurtado went 1-2
scoring two of the eight runs for the Trojans. Hurtado is 5-8 on
the season while drawing five base on balls.
Anderson will be back on the diamond on Saturday, when the
Trojans host Peach Belt foe Georgia College. First pitch is
