ANDERSON, S.C. - Sophomore Rachel Barefield's walk-off two-run
homer in the bottom of the eighth inning propelled the Trojans to a
3-2 win in the opener, while Michaela Smith's fielder's choice
plated Courtney Czentnar with the winning run in a 3-2 decision in
the nightcap, as the Anderson softball team swept Pfeiffer,
Saturday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex.
With the sweep, Anderson improved to 13-3 on the season with its
10th straight win, while Pfeiffer fell to 10-8.
Game #1
Anderson 3, Pfeiffer 2 (Eight Innings)
Sophomore Carli Hurtado was 3-for-4 in the opener with three
singles, while Barefield was 2-for-4 with a single in addition to
her game-winning two-run shot. Freshman Madison Bivins also posted
a solo home run in the second inning - her second of the
season.
Sophomore Randee Bettis improved to 2-0 on the season after
surrendering two runs (one earned) and scattering four hits over
eight innings of work. The native of Hull, Ga., fanned eight
Falcons and walked four.
The Falcons manufactured a solo run in the top of the second
inning on a leadoff walk and back-to-back one-out singles, with
Anderson's Bivins answering with her home run in the bottom of the
inning to even the contest at 1-1.
The contest went to extra innings with the score still knotted
at one apiece, with Pfeiffer taking a 2-1 advantage in the top of
the eighth inning. After freshman Virginia Moore was placed at
second to start the home half of the eighth inning, Barefield
followed with her heroics, lifting the ball beyond the fence in
left-center for the victory.
Game #2
Anderson 3, Pfeiffer 2 (Nine Innings)
Senior Molly Child was 1-for-3 with her first home run of the
season, while sophomore Cailah Niles reached base three
times.
Junior hurler Augie Pena improved to 5-1 on the season after
scattering seven hits over nine innings and allowing just two
unearned runs. She struck out 10 and walked two.
After Pfeiffer claimed a 2-0 lead on a two-out home run in the
top of the fifth inning, Child knotted the score by pulling her
homer inside the right-field foul pole with Hurtado on first base
in the bottom of the sixth frame.
The score remained even at two apiece through one extra inning,
with Czentnar being placed on second to start the bottom of the
ninth inning. She swiped third and both Pena and Barefield followed
with walks to load the bases. Two batters later, Smith bounced to
the right side of the infield and Czentnar beat the throw to the
plate, scoring the winning run.
Anderson continues its 16-game homestand on Sunday, when the
Trojans welcome St. Augustine's to the AU Softball Complex for a 1
p.m. doubleheader.
