ANDERSON, S.C. -Behind a 24-hit attack and pitching that
scattered seven hits over 12 innings, the Anderson University
softball team won its eighth straight contest by sweeping a
nonconference doubleheader, 10-2 and 8-5, past Clark Atlanta,
Saturday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex.
Anderson improved to 11-3 on the season and has won all eight
meetings with Clark Atlanta. The Panthers slipped to 0-6 on the
young season.
Game #1
Anderson 10, Clark Atlanta 2 (5 innings)
Anderson scored in each of the first three innings taking advantage
of nine hits and two errors. Sophomore Cailah Niles was a perfect
3-for-3 with two singles, one double, and two RBI. Senior Molly
Child also added three hits in three at-bats, knocked in two RBI
and crossed the plate three times. Junior designated player Augie
Pena kept her hot bat alive going 2-for-2 with three RBI and
ripping her fifth double of the year. Fellow junior Courtney
Czentnar drew three walks on three plate appearances while scoring
two runs in game one.
Junior pitcher Lauren Rudesheim pitched a five inning complete
game moving her overall record to (5-2) on the year. The Trojan
hurler gave up three hits while striking out 10 Panther hitters.
Clark Atlanta pitcher Kendall Washington (0-2) dropped her second
decision of the season.
Game #2
Anderson 8, Clark Atlanta 5
Anderson used all 14 hits to finally put away the Panthers in game
two. The Trojans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first
inning, but Clark Atlanta answered back with five runs, two in the
second and three in the third. The Black and Gold used single runs
in the fourth and fifth innings to knot the game at five.
The Trojans put the game away scoring three runs in the bottom
half of the sixth inning. Freshman Kasey Grant led the inning off
with a walk and was later called out on a fielder's choice by
shortstop Carli Hurtado. Child singled to right field for her fifth
hit on the day advancing Hurtado to second. Niles singled to right
field to knock in the go ahead run. The Black and Gold added two
more runs in the inning on an infield single by Czentnar and
sophomore Rachael Barefield to put Anderson up 8-5. Rudesheim
struck out the side to end the game.
Anderson's Randee Bettis pitched two and a third innings, giving
up five runs on four hits. Pena was able to get the Trojans out of
a jam in the top of the 3rd getting the two batters she faced to
ground out. During the bottom half of the inning, Pena injured her
hamstring sliding into second with Rudesheim relieving Pena in the
circle to start the fourth inning. Rudesheim gave up no hits while
striking out eight to win her sixth game of the year. Sophomore
Ajada Cofield (0-4) took the loss for the Panthers in six innings
of work.
Anderson continues its 16-game homestand with a twin bill
against Pfeiffer University on Wednesday. First-pitch at the AU
Softball Complex is slated for 2 p.m.
