TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The Anderson University softball team picked up
two road wins by sweeping North Greenville, 4-3 and 6-4, in
nonconference action Thursday afternoon at Pepsi Field.
Anderson improved to 5-3 on the season with the pair of wins,
while North Greenville drops to 4-2.
Game #1
Anderson 4, North Greenville 3
Anderson got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning
by taking advantage of a lead-off walk to Kasey Grant. Shortstop
Carli Hurtado singled, extending her hitting streak to seven,
moving Grant to second. Senior Molly Child executed the sacrifice
bunt advancing Grant and Hurtado to second and third. Batting in
the clean-up spot, Augie Pena singled to drive in the first run of
the game.
The Crusaders' answered back in the bottom half of the third
inning with a solo home run by catcher Morgan Roach. Anderson's
Pena was able to get the next two batters to pop to the right side
to end the inning.
The Trojans scored one run in each of the next three innings.
Junior right fielder Courtney Czentnar hit a one out homerun in the
top of the fourth, her first of the season and 18th of her career
to add a run for the Black and Gold. In the top of the fifth
freshman Madison Bivins blasted her first career home run, a two
out solo shot increasing the Trojans lead to 3-1. Anderson added an
insurance run in the top of the sixth on a one out single by
Hurtado pushing the lead to 4-1. North Greenville threatened in the
bottom of the seventh when the Crusader first baseman hit a two-run
home run closing the gap to one, 4-3. Anderson's Randee Bettis who
entered in the sixth inning in relief, shut down the rally to earn
the save.
Anderson pitcher Augie Pena (2-1) nabbed her second win of the
season pitching five innings, allowing only two hits and striking
out five.
Game #2
Anderson 6, North Greenville 4 (8 innings)
Game two would take extra innings to decide who would come out on
top. The Trojans held on in the eighth frame to earn the
doubleheader sweep over the Crusaders 6-4.
Catcher Cailah Niles put Anderson on the scoreboard first with a
two out, two RBI double in the top of the third. North Greenville
produced a run in the bottom of the fifth when the lead-off batter
reached on an error later scoring on a sacrifice fly. With the
score 2-1, Anderson scored again in the top half of the sixth
inning on an RBI single by first baseman Rachael Barefield. The
Black and Gold scored on the next play when second baseman Grant
was hit by a pitch with bases loaded adding to the 4-1 Trojan
lead.
Anderson went scoreless in the top half of the seventh inning
setting up another comeback attempt by the Crusaders'. North
Greenville scored three runs on two hits to force the Trojans into
their second extra inning game of the young season.
In the Trojans half of the inning, they scored two runs on three
of their 11 hits to go ahead 6-4. Pena came on strong in relief
striking out the first two batters she faced, ending any chance the
Crusaders' had in the bottom of the eighth. Pena picked up her
second save of the year.
Junior pitcher Lauren Rudesheim (2-2) pitched seven innings to
grab her second win of the season for the Trojans. Rudesheim faced
34 batters giving up seven hits and striking out seven
Crusaders.
Anderson is slated to begin a 16 game homestand Saturday, with
the Trojans welcoming Augusta to the AU Softball Complex. First
pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
