MORROW, Ga. - Despite a first-half goal from newcomer Remi
Lesterlou, Anderson University men's soccer allowed a late
equalizer and an eventual golden goal in overtime to fall to
Clayton State, 2-1, on the final day of the 10th Annual Loch Shop
Shootout on Saturday at Laker Field.
With the setback, the Trojans fall to an even 1-1 mark while the
host of the Shootout, CSU, improves to a perfect 2-0 record.
Anderson managed just seven shots for the evening, while on the
opposite end, the Lakers totaled 23, including 11 on goal. Newcomer
Josh Calabria paced the Black and Gold with a pair of shots, as
five different Trojans tallied one shot apiece on the night. AU
troubled Clayton State goalkeeper, Oliver Pannell four times with
four shots on goal.
The visitors found the scoreboard first when they were awarded a
corner kick on the 40th minute. Lesterlou sent the corner into the
CSU box and bounced into the net for the match's opening goal. For
Lesterlou, the goal was his first in a Trojan uniform after
transferring during the offseason.
After Anderson took the 1-0 advantage into halftime, Clayton
State responded in the 77th minute when Laker Sekou Thornell
grabbed a cross from Avery Shepard and headed in the host's first
goal of the night. For Thornell, the goal was his first of the
season as he beat AU's Ashy to his right.
After the teams were scoreless for the remaining 13 minutes of
play, the final match of the Loch Shop Shootout needed extra time.
When the teams kicked off the first overtime period, Clayton State
needed just 1:39 of the clock for Iain Smith to find the
game-winning goal. Smith's shot, the overtime period's lone shot,
bounced past Ashy for the golden goal and handed the Lakers their
second straight victory on the season.
Ashy closed the match with a career-high nine saves, as he faced
14 shots in the second half. The ball found the Anderson goalkeeper
multiple times, as the Trojans managed just two shots in the final
45 minutes.
Anderson looks to get back on track on Wednesday when it begins
its home schedule by welcoming Shorter to Trojan Stadium. Kick-off
with the Hawks is slated for 5 p.m.
