MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Freshman Randall Shaw poured in 26 points
and sophomore guard Tre' Fields scored a career-high 15 points, but
Anderson dropped a 69-66 decision to Georgia College in
nonconference men's basketball action Wednesday night at the
Centennial Center.
Anderson slipped to 1-2 on the season with its second straight
loss, while Georgia College (3-0), which received votes in the most
recent Southeast Region Media Poll, stayed perfect on the young
season by snapping a three-game losing streak at the hands of the
Trojans.
Shaw was 6-of-14 from the field and 11-of-12 from the free throw
line, while adding four rebounds on the night. Junior center Rakish
Taylor nearly posted his second consecutive double-double with nine
points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Georgia College senior Terrell Harris, the reigning Peach Belt
Conference Player of the Week, shared game-high honors with 26
points, with Dwight Anderson adding 16 points and Ryan Blumenthal
chipping in 11 points for the Bobcats.
Both teams opened slowly on the offensive end, as they combined
for just three field goals in the first four minutes of play, with
Shaw's two free throws at the 17:13 mark giving AU their first
lead, at 4-3. The Greenville, S.C., native's 3-pointer less than a
minute later extended the Black and Gold's advantage to 7-3 with
16:22 on the clock.
The Trojans opened a 10-5 lead on Shaw's second straight trey,
but the Bobcats stayed close and knotted the score at 17 apiece
when Matt McCorkle connected on his lone 3-pointer of the game.
Fields countered with a trey that gave the Trojans a three-point
lead, and with the score even at 26-26, Fields followed with a
3-pointer that gave the Trojans a lead they would hold for the next
22 minutes. Fields, Shaw and freshman Shawn Benard combined for
four free throws over the final four minutes of the opening half
and the Trojans went to the break holding a 33-30 advantage.
Georgia College's Harris scored the first basket of the second
half to trim AU's lead to just one, but the Trojans answered with
an 18-7 outburst to claim their largest lead of the game, at 51-39,
with 11:36 left, as Shaw scored seven points and Taylor chipped in
three points to fuel the surge.
With Anderson holding a 57-49 lead with less than six minutes
remaining, the Trojans went more than four minutes without scoring
and did not score another field goal until Shaw connected on a
3-pointer with two seconds on the clock. The scoring drought
enabled the Bobcats to go on a 21-8 outburst and turn the 12-point
deficit into their first lead since the opening moments of the
contest, at 60-59, on a 3-pointer by Harris.
Shaw answered on the other end with a pair of free throws to
give the Trojans their final lead of the night, at 61-60, with 49
seconds on the clock. Harris followed with another trey and a pair
of free throws to give the Bobcats their largest cushion of the
night at 65-61. Fields and Blumenthal traded a pair of free throws
and with less than six seconds on the clock, Shaw drained his third
3-pointer to pull AU back within 67-66. Forced to foul, the Trojans
sent Blumenthal back to the line, where he connected on two free
throws with less than a second showing on the clock to set the
final margin.
The Trojans conclude their season-opening four-game road swing
at Erskine on Saturday. Tip-off versus the Flying Fleet is slated
for 8 p.m. at Belk Arena in Due West.
