DUE WEST, S.C. - Despite a first-half goal from junior
midfielder Brad Du Plooy, Anderson University men's soccer allowed
two second-half goals to archrival Erskine and fell 2-1 in a
nonconference matchup at Huggins Field Tuesday evening.
With the setback, the Trojans (6-5-1) fail to claim a point
against the Flying Fleet for the first time in three years and drop
their first match to Erskine since 2011. With the victory, Erskine
snaps a four-match winless stretch and improves to 4-6-2 on the
season.
In the early moments of the match, the AU offense shined as the
visitor's first goal came in the ninth minute of play when newcomer
Erik Dahlbeck found Du Plooy for the junior's second goal in as
many matches and fourth of his collegiate career. For Dahlbeck, the
assist was the midfielder's first of his career with the Black and
Gold.
For the first half, the Trojans totaled four shots compared to
Erskine's one, but settled with the one-goal advantage at the
halftime break. The first-half lead marked AU's first advantage
heading into halftime since its 3-2 triumph over Carson-Newman on
Oct. 3, despite currently riding a three-match winning streak
entering Tuesday.
Erskine found its equalizer in the 57th minute when Mateo Laredo
headed in a pass from Cameron Whitehurst for the home side's first
goal of the evening. Moments later in the 69th minute, Ross
Henderson provided the eventual game-winner for the Flying Fleet
off a cross from teammate Jake Lochstampfor.
Following the Erskine goal, Anderson managed three shots but
could not draw even with its rivals. Du Plooy and senior forward
Andre Carle paced the Trojans in the shot category with three
apiece, as the Trojans mirrored the Fleet in shots for the match,
9-9.
In goal, Devon Ashy made one save for the match, while his
counterpart, CJ Cluck, made five saves, including four in the final
45 minutes.
With Erskine's victory, the Fleet leads in the Beville Cup
standings, 2-1, following EC's win on the volleyball court on Oct.
7. In early September, the AU Women's Soccer team provided the
Trojans their first point in the race for the Cup with a 9-0
victory. This spring, Anderson looks to retain the prestigious
Beville Cup for the fourth straight year.
Anderson looks to get back on the winning track on Saturday when
it returns to South Atlantic Conference action against Catawba.
Kick-off from Trojan Stadium is slated for 3:30 p.m.
