ANDERSON, S.C. - In his first appearance in the long-standing
rivalry between Anderson University and Erskine College, freshman
Magnus Larsen scored an 86th minute goal to hand AU men's soccer a
1-0 win over the Flying Fleet, while also giving the Trojans their
first point towards their run for a third straight Beville Cup,
Wednesday evening at Trojan Stadium.
With the victory, AU has won its last two contests and moves to
an even 2-2 on the year. The win marks its third straight over its
in-state rival as Anderson is now 3-1-2 against the Fleet in the
last six seasons. With the setback, Erskine stumbles to 3-2 on the
young season.
In the opening half, the Trojan offense shined and it outshot
the visitors 11-1 in the period. Junior forward Andre Carle paced
the attack with four shots for the first 45 minutes, while Larsen
and senior William Treichler each tallied a shot on goal. Erskine's
lone shot for the period came at the 25 minute mark as it troubled
AU goalkeeper Bo Haug. EC's Silvio Braun fired a shot over Haug's
head, forcing him to tip the ball over the goal for his only stop
of the match. Braun's shot was Erskine's lone shot on goal for the
evening.
In the second half, the Black and Gold's offense began to slow
as the as it totaled just five shots for the final period. With
just over four minutes to play, Carle made a run down the right
side of the field and found Treichler in the Erskine box. Treichler
flicked a pass to Larsen who headed the pass into the back-right
corner of the goal. For Larsen, the goal was his second on the
season after scoring the eventual game-winner at Catawba on
Saturday.
The Anderson backline maintained Erskine's forwards, as the
Flying Fleet entered Saturday with nine goals scored in the first
four matches of the young season. The Trojans handed their rivals
their first scoreless game, as the Trojan backline consisting of:
Lars Zimmerman, Oliver Wright, Alex Delpy and Mattias Schyberg held
EC to just four shots for the contest.
Anderson returns to action on Saturday when it resumes South
Atlantic Conference play at Coker. Kickoff from Hartsville is
slated for 7 p.m.
