SALISBURY, N.C. - Adding goals from newcomer Magnus Larsen and
junior Andre Carle to a stellar defensive performance, Anderson
University men's soccer earned its first victory of the 2014
season, as the Trojans shutout South Atlantic Conference rival
Catawba, 2-0, Saturday evening at E.B. Frock Field.
With the triumph, first-year head coach Michael Zion claims his
first career victory as a head coach after taking over the program
in late April. In addition to Zion's first win, the Trojans record
their first victory of the season, snapping a two-match losing
streak to begin the year. Catawba, which also opened SAC play on
Saturday, falls to 1-3 overall.
"I'm excited to get our first win of the 2014 season," Zion
said. "I'm very proud of the team and the performance. It is always
nice to get a shutout on the road and I'm thankful to all the boys
for my first win as a head coach."
The Trojans totaled 11 shots for the evening as eight different
players posted at least one shot. Larsen, who put AU on the
scoreboard in the first half, led the visitors with two shots on
goal, while Carle and senior Mattias Schyberg also troubled Catawba
goalkeeper Christian Watts.
Watts' counterpart, sophomore Bo Haug, earned his first clean
sheet of the year despite not recording a save on the evening.
Anderson's backline held the Indians to just four shots with none
coming on goal. Catawba's Jordan Chillson paced the home side with
two shots.
In the first half, Anderson wasted little time to find the
scoreboard as Larsen collected a loose ball in the Catawba box and
fired a shot passed Watts for AU's first goal since its season
opener on Sept. 4. Sophomore Brad Du Plooy was credited for the
assist as he becomes the first Trojan with a goal and an assist on
the year.
After closing the half with a 6-3 advantage in the shot
category, Carle added the Black and Gold's insurance goal when he
knocked in his first tally of the year after scoring a team-high 12
goals a season ago. Defender Oliver Wright fed Carle for the
Trojans' second and final goal of the evening.
With the win, Anderson continues its success over the Indians
since becoming members of the SAC prior to the 2010 season. The
Trojans improved their record over their Tar Heel State rivals to
4-0-1 while outscoring Catawba 16-5 in the five-year span.
After three straight road contests to begin the season, AU opens
its home schedule on Wednesday when it continues its long-standing
rivalry with Erskine. Kickoff from Trojan Stadium is scheduled for
4 p.m.
