ROCK HILL, S.C. - After dropping all three doubles matches, fifth-seeded Anderson University women's tennis was unable to make a comeback in the singles round, as fourth-seeded Newberry eliminated the Trojans from the postseason with a 5-2 victory in the quarterfinals of the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Wednesday at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.

With the setback, AU closes the 2014 campaign with an 8-9 record, while the Wolves advance to Thursday's semifinal against top-seeded Wingate and improve to 16-7 overall.

Newberry jumped out quickly in the doubles round, notching three straight victories. Marina Ziehe and Vanessa Ortiz claimed the first points of the match with an 8-2 win over Anderson's duo of Rebecca Bruning and Lindsay Gregory at the No. 2 position. At No. 3, Shannon McManus and Tara Lamers knocked off Alexandra Ebner and Nikkola Wichenko, 8-4, to increase the NC lead.

Rounding out the doubles round, the Newberry team of Susana Aguirre and Romina Adum defeated Karen Ching and Avery Owens at the No. 1 slot, 8-5.

Aguirre increased the Newberry lead with a straight-set win, defeating Ching 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 position. Anderson tried to make a comeback with back-to-back singles wins as Owens knocked off Adum 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2, while Gregory defeated Ariel Strong 6-4, 6-4 at No.5.

Despite the two wins, Ortiz sealed the win with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Bruning to put the Wolves into the next round of the annual tournament.

Newberry is scheduled to face top-seeded Wingate on Thursday at the Rock Hill Tennis Center, beginning at 9 a.m.
