DUE WEST, S.C. - In the first leg of a season-long three-game
set, Anderson University baseball could not get the bats going
against long-time archrival Erskine, falling 6-0 Tuesday afternoon
in non-conference action at Grier Field.
The Trojans managed just one hit in their first road trip of the
season after recording 33 hits in a three-game set against
nationally ranked UNC Pembroke last weekend. The lone AU hit came
in the third inning off the bat of junior outfielder Ryan Mills for
a sharp single.
The Flying Fleet, who claimed their season opener with the win,
sent out four pitchers, starting with junior Austin Gambrell who
tossed seven complete innings and striking out seven Trojan
hitters. Gambrell received his offensive help in the fifth inning
when the Fleet crossed five runners to separate from AU after
holding a 1-0 lead after the second inning.
Erskine's offense was led by leadoff batter Andrew Kozak who
went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Redshirt junior Zach
Smith, redshirt senior Will Huff and junior Logan Galliher posted
two hits on the afternoon, while Cody Spence posted a hit and two
runs scored.
Anderson (0-4) starter David Thompson tossed 4.2 innings and
struck out four batters, while junior Evan Jordan went 1.1 innings
and struck out three Erskine batters. Preseason All-SAC Second Team
honoree Landon Beck tossed one complete and struck out two.
With the setback, Anderson posted its lowest hit total since the
2011 season and dropped its first game to Erskine after winning two
straight a season ago.
Anderson returns to action on Friday when it begins South
Atlantic Conference play at Mars Hill for a three-game series with
a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch from Henderson Field is
slated for 2 p.m.
