NEWBERRY, S.C. – Anderson University battled throughout both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Newberry College, but the Trojans came up just short in both contests, falling 3-2 and 5-4 in a pair of one-run decisions at the Smith Road Complex.
Game One: Newberry 3, Anderson 2
After falling behind 1–0 in the second inning, Anderson tied the game in the top of the sixth. Dom Bello led off with a double and later scored when Brooks Mauro grounded a single through the right side. Gray Wells followed with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home pinch runner Carson Molinaroli and giving Anderson a brief 2-1 lead.
Newberry responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game and plated the game-winner in the seventh. Anderson had runners on base in the late innings but couldn't find the timely hit to extend the game.
Game Two: Newberry 5, Anderson 4
The Trojans wasted no time getting on the board in the second game. After a leadoff walk to Molinaroli, Mauro drove him in with a single to left to give Anderson a 1-0 lead.
Down 5-1 in the fifth, Anderson rallied when Gray Wells launched a solo home run, the second of his season, to right center. Two batters later, Bello lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Molinaroli, trimming the deficit to two. In the seventh, the Trojans staged another push: Bello reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a throwing error to cut the Newberry lead to one. But the comeback stalled with the tying run stranded at second.
Anderson will head to Augusta, Ga. for their final midweek contest of the year before welcoming in Lenoir-Rhyne to Anderson Memorial Stadium for their final conference series of the year next weekend.
