ANDERSON, S.C. - As the rain poured throughout the 109 minutes
of action, the No. 19 ranked Anderson University men's soccer team
lost a heartbreaker to South Atlantic Conference newcomer Coker 2-1
in double overtime Saturday afternoon at Trojan Stadium.
The narrow setback gives the Trojans its first loss of the
season as they moved to 4-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in SAC play. With
the victory, the Cobras moved to 2-1-2 and 1-0-1 within the
conference.
After a scoreless first half, AU was whistled for a foul within
its own box and Coker was awarded a penalty kick early into the
second half. With the golden opportunity, Stephen Scrivens beat AU
goalkeeper Bo Haug and Coker took the 1-0 lead in the 47th
minute.
With the rain continuing the fall, the Trojans found its
equalizer in the 63rd minute when freshman Aaron Roberson fired in
a shot that was stopped by Coker goalkeeper Kyndle Cobb. Cobb was
unable to hold onto the ball and redshirt sophomore Andre Carle
knocked home Anderson's first goal of the match over Cobb's reach.
For Carle, the goal increases his team-lead in the category to
five.
The teams were unable to decide a winner for the rest of
regulation and first overtime period, as the field was completely
covered in mud. In what looked to be a draw, Coker got one final
chance, as the Cobras were awarded a corner kick. Jordan Snell was
able to loft to the back post where he found Scrivens. The
midfielder was able to slide a shot past Haug for the golden goal
and his second tally of the match.
For the match, the shots category was even at 12-12, but just
four Cobra shots were on goal as Haug recorded two saves for the
match. The Trojans totaled five shots on goal as Carle and redshirt
sophomore Lars Zimmerman each had two apiece.
"I thought the first half was decent and we had a grip of the
game," head coach John Murphy said. "We are still a young and new
team so we have to learn from our mistakes and tighten up quickly
as we head into the heart of our conference schedule."
Anderson returns to its SAC schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 25 as
it heads to Queens for its first matchup as members of the South
Atlantic Conference. Kickoff from the Queen City is slated for 5
p.m.
