GREENVILLE, S.C. - Sophomore hurler Spencer Earle tossed six
full innings of one-run baseball and relievers Kyle Francis and
Landon Beck combined to shut out Lander over the final three
innings, as the Anderson baseball team upset nationally 10th-ranked
Lander, 4-1, Tuesday night at Fluor Field.
Anderson (15-30) has won two of its last three and split the
season series after avenging a 7-5 setback suffered a week ago in
Greenwood at the hands of the Bearcats. Lander (29-9) suffered its'
third straight setback.
Senior Tony Price led the Trojans offensively, going 2-for-3 at
the plate with two RBI and also scored a run. First baseman Steven
Cooper added a single and an RBI, while Shawn Delmontagne and
Jonathan Zalud each posted singles. Senior Erick Sanderson recorded
a ninth-inning RBI.
Earle (2-4) allowed just one earned run on five hits over the
six-inning stint. The right-hander struck out five and walked four
and allowed just a pair of singles through the first four innings.
Francis tossed an inning of hitless relief while striking out one,
while Beck earned his league-leading eighth save of the season. He
did not allow a hit in two innngs of work, while striking out three
and walking two.
Lander's Johnny Walker (0-1) took the loss, while surrendering
two earned runs on two hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief. He struck
out two and walked one.
The Bearcats threatened in the second inning after Conner Lewis
drew a lead-off walk and Weston Lawing followed with an infield
single. Burt Earle settled down and retired Lander on an infield
pop out and back-to-back strikeouts.
Zalud recorded Anderson's first hit of the night with a one-out
single in the third, but the Trojans were unable to capitalize.
Earle limited Lander to just a pair of singles through the first
four innings, but the Bearcats got on the scoreboard in the top of
the fifth by taking advantage of back-to-back singles with one out,
and Graham Ramos' double off the green monster in left field scored
Aaron Poole with the game's first run.
The Trojans answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame,
as Delmontagne led off with a single through the left side and
Nathan Galliford followed with a walk. Both runners moved up on
Paul Como's sacrifice bunt and Price's two-out single to left
plated both runners. Price moved into scoring position when the
Bearcat outfielder bobbled the ball, but AU was unable to take
advantage.
Anderson added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning
when Price singled and moved into scoring position on Brett Cash's
sacrifice bunt. After Josh Hickman coaxed a walk, Cooper's
RBI-single brought home Price and Sanderson's deep fly to center
plated Hickman.
Anderson opens a four-game road swing at Southern Wesleyan on
Thursday. First-pitch versus the Warriors is scheduled for 5
p.m
