Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Box score

ANDERSON, S.C. - Abbey Child, Molly Child and Bailey Smith combined for 10 hits and eight RBI, as the Anderson softball team closed out the home portion of its South Atlantic Conference slate by sweeping Carson-Newman, 5-3 and 7-6, Saturday afternoon at Smethers Field.

Anderson (32-9, 9-4 SAC) celebrated Senior Day with the sweep, as the Trojans bid farewell to their lone senior, Kelly McInnes, between contests. AU snapped a brief three-game skid by taking the two victories and claimed sole possession of second place in the league standings, while Carson-Newman (26-14, 8-6 SAC) had its win streak halted at four.

Game #1
Anderson 5, Carson-Newman 3

Smith helped her cause in the circle by going 2-for-3 at the plate, while recording her seventh home run of the season and driving in three total runs. Freshman Molly Child was 2-for-3 in the opener and scored once, with junior Abby Child adding a pair of singles in three trips to the plate and scoring once, as well.

Smith, a junior right-hander, improved to 15-5 on the season with the complete-game win, while surrendering three runs (two earned) on 10 hits. She struck out five and walked one. Carson-Newman freshman Kaitie Sims absorbed the loss, falling to 16-3 on the season. The right-hander gave up five earned runs on eight hits over six innings. She struck out two and walked one.

The Eagles capitalized on back-to-back extra-base hits to open the game and took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, before Smith countered for the Trojans by lofting her two-run home run beyond the fence in left field with one out in the second frame, plating Bri Cason, who had bounced into a fielder' choice.

The Trojans added a run in the third inning, as Abby Child singled with one out and following a double from Molly Child, she scored when Jansky bounced out to the right side of the infield, giving AU a 3-1 edge.

Carson-Newman junior Brittany Hefner ripped her league-leading 18th home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning to trim Anderson's lead to 3-2, but the Trojans answered with a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to push out to a 5-2 lead. Molly Child led off the frame with a double to right-center and following a walk to Jansky, Smith brought Child home by singling back up the middle. Junior Samantha Young then bounced into a fielders' choice to plate McInnes, who pinch-ran for Jansky.

Elayna Siebert led off the Carson-Newman seventh inning with a single and following a fielders' choice and a walk, the Eagles had the go-ahead run at the plate with no outs, but Smith settled down to retire the side on a line out, another fielders' choice and a bouncer back to the circle.

Game #2
Anderson 7, Carson-Newman 6

The Trojans rallied for seven runs in the final two innings, as Abby Child's walk-off three-run home run, her seventh of the campaign, capped the comeback. She finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and scored two runs. Junior Danielle Swygert added a pair of singles, while scoring twice and driving in a run. Molly Child posted a two-run double and crossed the plate once. Smith and junior Charlotte Sieber each added a double.

Junior Lauren Bell (17-5) earned the complete-game win, giving up six runs (three earned) on nine hits over the seven-inning stint. She struck out eight and walked five.

Carson-Newman junior sophomore Cassie Lyons (10-11), who had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings, suffered the loss. She finished the game with four strikeouts and two walks, while giving up the seven earned runs on nine hits.

The Eagles sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning and jumped out to a 5-0 lead by adding an unearned run in the second frame.

Carson-Newman pushed out to a 6-0 advantage with another run in the sixth and Lyons retired the Trojans in order in the first, second and fifth innings, while issuing just two walks and hitting one batter through the first five frames.

But the Trojan bats woke up in the sixth, with Swygert sparking a one-out rally by hitting a ball back to the third-base side of the circle that ricocheted off Lyons' glove. Abby Child followed with a double to left-center and Molly Child's double plated both Swygert and Abby Child. Jansky's single brought home Molly Child to trim the deficit to 6-3.

Anderson completed the rally in the bottom of the seventh frame, as Sieber led off with a double and Jessica Neidigh singled to center. Swygert's single brought home Sieber and with two runners on, Abby Child lifted her game-winning three-run homer high above the fence in left-center.

AU travels to Lincoln Memorial on Monday to replay game two of their league doubleheader from a week ago, as a rule misinterpretation sparked a protest with the Trojans trailing 5-3 in the third inning. The contest will resume in the top half of the third inning with two outs and Jansky at second base. First-pitch versus the Lady Railsplitters is set for 2 p.m. in Harrogate, Tenn.
