SALISBURY, N.C. - Robyn Stanek's sacrifice fly in the bottom of
the seventh inning gave Mars Hill a walk-off 4-3 victory past
Anderson in a 2013 Food Lion SAC Softball Tournament elimination
game, held Friday at Salisbury Community Park.
Anderson slipped to 37-13 on the season, while Mars Hill
improved to 25-15. Anderson, which was ranked fifth in the
Southeast Region in the most recent NCAA ranking, will have its
postseason fate determined on Sunday, May 5, when the NCAA unveils
its seeding for the region. The Lions advanced to meet the loser of
the Catawba/Tusculum matchup.
Anderson's Charlotte Sieber snapped a 2-2 tie in the top of the
seventh inning with her third home run of the season, a solo shot
beyond the fence in left-center, but Mars Hill answered by pushing
across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn the
victory.
Mars Hill capitalized on a pair of AU miscues to break through
in the bottom of the first with a pair of unearned runs. Brittany
Gibson reached on an infield single a came around to score on a
fielder's choice after an AU throwing error. The Lions added
another run on an error to make the score 2-0.
Anderson answered with a pair of runs in the second, as a Laura
Jansky double and a Bri Cason walk put two runners on with no outs.
Two batters later Sieber's two-run single scored both runners and
knotted the score at two apiece.
The score remained knotted at 2-2 until Sieber's homer in the
top of the seventh gave the Trojans a 3-2 lead. A leadoff walk
drawn by Stephanie McGrath set up Mars Hill's rally in the seventh.
McGrath came around to score on a throwing error off an Ashley
McCurry sacrifice bunt attempt, with McCurry advancing all the way
to third on the play. After a groundout, Stanek lifted a fly ball
to left to score McCurry with the winning run.
Sieber finished 2-for-3 on the afternoon and drove in all three
of the Trojans' runs, while Danielle Swygert added a pair of
singles for AU. Stanek was credited with Mars Hill's lone RBI.
Junior Lauren Bell (20-6) absorbed the tough-luck loss for the
Trojans, tossing 6 2/3 innings and gave up four runs (none earned),
while striking out four and walking two.
Taylor Morris (12-5) earned the complete-game win for Mars Hill,
giving up three earned runs and striking out six and walking
two.
