ANDERSON, S.C. - Junior Samantha Young's two-run walk-off single
to the fence in right-center field gave Anderson the win in game
one, while the Trojans rallied for four runs in the third inning of
the nightcap to sweep North Greenville, 8-7 and 9-6, in
nonconference softball action Monday evening at a cold and windy
Smethers Field.
With the wind chill hovering around the freezing mark, Anderson
improved to 29-5 on the season by winning its 10th straight contest
and 14th of its last 16 outings. With the sweep, the Trojans
continued to build on their best mark in school history at this
point of the season and improved to 13-1 at home on the season.
North Greenville slipped to 8-14 on the season and has dropped
four of its last five decisions.
Game #1
Anderson 8, North Greenville 7
Freshman Molly Child drove in four runs with a fourth-inning
grand slam, while sophomore Jessica Neidigh was 3-for-4 and scored
twice. Junior Danielle Swygert added a pair of singles in five
at-bats and junior hurler Bailey Smith helped her cause in the
circle with a single and a pair of walks.
Smith (13-3) tossed her 16th complete game, giving up seven
earned runs and striking out two and not walking a batter to earn
the win. North Greenville junior Rachel Glazebrook (6-6) suffered
the loss, surrendering eight earned runs over 6 2/3 innings. She
struck out six and walked four.
After North Greenville rallied for five runs over the final two
innings, including posting three runs on a pair of homers in the
top of the seventh inning, the Trojans answered with a pair of runs
on Young's two-out single to the fence with the bases loaded,
scoring Abby Child from third and Danielle Swygert from second.
Abby Child had opened the inning with her second walk of the
contest and Swygert notched her second single to get two runners on
base with no outs. Three batters later, Smith drew a walk to load
the bases and Young followed by going the opposite way for the
game-winner.
North Greenville opened the game by taking a 2-0 lead after a
half-inning on Glazebrook's one-out home run to center field.
Anderson countered with a solo run in the bottom of the frame to
trim the deficit to 2-1. Neidigh led off with the first of her
three singles and crossed the plate on Swygert's base hit.
The score remained the same until freshman Molly Child launched her
sixth home run of the season beyond the fence in right-center with
the bases full for a grand slam and a 5-2 Trojan lead in the fourth
inning. The Crusaders took advantage of one-out back-to-back
doubles from Kansas Wofford and Marielena Santos to pull within 5-4
in the top of the sixth inning, while AU countered with a run in
the bottom of the frame.
North Greenville's Amy Nagel and Rachel Holman each homered in
the top of the final inning, as the Crusaders batted around and
took a brief 7-6 edge and setting up AU's final- inning
heroics.
Game #2

while Abby Child was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. She

2-4 on the season, after throwing three innings of relief and
surrendering seven runs on eight hits and walking five.
The Trojans opened the nightcap by taking a 2-0 lead in the
bottom of the first inning, but North Greenville answered with a
five-run second inning, with four runs crossing the plate on
Glazebrook's two-out grand slam.
But Anderson sent 10 batters to the plate in the third inning en
route to plating four runs of its own and taking a lead it would
not relinquish, at 6-5. The Trojans batted around again in the
fourth frame, building a 9-5 advantage.
North Greenville added an unearned run in the sixth, but would
get no closer.
Anderson jumps back into South Atlantic Conference action by
