ANDERSON, S.C. - With a strong gusting wind and a bright sun
creating difficulties for the outfielders, the Anderson softball
team recorded 22 hits, including nine for extra bases en route to
earning its first South Atlantic Conference victories by sweeping
Brevard, 13-3 and 9-1, Thursday afternoon at Smethers Field.
Anderson (21-5, 2-2 SAC) has won four of its last six and
improved to 7-1 at home, while Brevard (7-16, 0-4 SAC) has suffered
four straight setbacks.
Game #1
Anderson 13, Brevard 3 (5 innings)
Junior pitcher Bailey Smith helped her own cause in the circle
by recording two hits and a single, including her fourth home run
of the season in the decisive third inning. Junior Daniele Swygert
was 2-for-2 with four RBI and scored once, while blasting her
fourth homer of the season. Sophomore Bri Cason was 2-for-3 with a
double and a single and crossed the plate once. Sophomore Jessica
Neidigh had two hits and a walk and scored three times. Freshman
Molly Child was 1-for-2, with a three-run homer in the third
inning. Freshman Rachel Rhodes recorded a single and drove in two
runs, while scoring once. Junior Laura Jansky was 1-for-3 with her
third home run of the season - a three-run blast to left-center in
the first inning.
Smith (9-3) earned her 12th complete game of the season by
surrendering three earned runs off seven hits over five full
innings. The right-hander struck out three and did not walk a
batter. Freshman hurler Jamie Hrobak (4-7) lasted 1/3 of an
inning, and was tagged with the loss after surrendering four earned
runs on just one hit but walked four Trojans and did not record a
strikeout. Senior Kayla Clemons tossed 3 2/3 innings in relief,
giving up nine earned runs off 11 hits, while notching three
strikeouts and walking two.
Hrrobak encountered control issues in the first inning, walking
the bases loaded and Swygert delivered a sacrifice fly to left to
plate Neidigh with the first run of the game. Jansky followed with
a three-run homer beyond the left-centerfield fence to push AU's
lead to 4-0 and provide Smith with all the support she would
need.
The Tornados trimmed Anderson's lead to just 4-3 in the second,
with Corrine Stiles and Alyssa Miller each recording run-scoring
doubles.
Neidigh tripled with one out in the second frame and crossed the
plate on Swygert's two-out single to left and the Trojans broke the
game open by erupting for seven runs and sending 10 batters to the
plate in the third inning. Molly Child, Swygert and Smith all
homered during the outburst.
Anderson added a solo run in the fourth to set the final
score.
Game #2
Anderson 9, Brevard 1 (5 innings)
Abby Child drove in four runs with a second-inning grand slam
and also recorded a walk, while Jansky ripped her second three-run
homer of the afternoon in the first inning. Swygert added a pair of
singles and a walk, while scoring twice. Neidigh was 2-for-4 in the
nightcap, with an RBI-double and a single.
Junior pitcher Lauren Bell (12-2) narrowly missed a no-hitter,
surrendering just a lead-off single to start the game, while
striking out one Tornado.
Jansky again provided power at the plate, following Abby Child's
two-out walk and Swygert's opposite-field hit down the left-field
line with another three-run homer in the bottom of the first.
Abby Child lined a two-out shot over the fence in right field
with the bases loaded to give the Trojans a 7-0 lead.
The Tornados spoiled the shutout with an unearned run in the third,
while AU countered with single runs in both the fourth and fifth
innings.
Anderson will get back on the diamond Saturday, with a league
doubleheader at Catawba. First-pitch versus the Indians is
scheduled for 1 p.m.
