ANDERSON, S.C. - Freshman Molly Child blasted her first collegiate grand slam and sophomore Jessica Neidigh went 6-for-7 on the day, as Anderson split a doubleheader with Southern Wesleyan, winning 7-3 and falling 5-3, Wednesday evening at Smethers Field.

Anderson moved to 5-1 with the split, while Southern Wesleyan moved to 1-1 on the season.

Game #1
Anderson 7, SWU 3

Neidigh was a perfect 3-for3 and reached base four times, with a pair of singles, a triple and a walk. The second baseman also crossed the plate twice. Child was 1-for-3 with the grand slam, while sophomore Bri Cason added a single in two at-bats and drove in a run.

Neidigh opened the bottom of the first inning with a triple to center field and scored when junior Abby Child bounced into a fielders' choice with one out, giving AU an early 1-0 lead.

The Warriors countered with a solo run in the top of the second frame, but Anderson sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning, as Molly Child powered the Trojans to a 5-1 advantage by pulling her two-out blast inside the right-field foul pole and well beyond the fence.

Anderson took a 6-1 lead by adding a solo run in the third, and after Southern Wesleyan added two runs in the top of the seventh inning, Abby Child ripped her second home run of the season with a shot over the left-center field fence.

Junior Lauren Bell earned the complete-game win, while walking five and striking out three. Stephanie Bourlet absorbed the loss for SWU, giving up five earned runs.

SWU 5, Anderson 3

Neidigh was 3-for-4, with three singles and crossed the plate twice, while junior catcher Laura Jansky posted a single and a double in four trips to the plate and also scored twice. Junior Danielle Swygert was 1-for-2 with a first-inning double and walked twice.

Neidigh led off the nightcap with an opposite-field single and scored on Swygert's double to left-center to give AU a quick 1-0 lead after the first inning, but following a scoreless second frame, Southern Wesleyan posted a three-run third inning on the strength of four singles to gain a lead the warriors would not relinquish.

SWU pushed out to a 4-1 lead on a fourth-inning home run by freshman Allison Barbee, with Anderson countering by scoring a pair of runs in the fifth to climb within 4-3.

The Warriors added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. AU threatened in its final at-bat, getting the tying run to second with no outs and loading the bases with one out, but was unable to capitalize.

Junior Bailey Smith took the loss, surrendering five runs on 11 hits, while not issuing a walk and striking out nine. Jenn Jacoby collected the win by tossing 6 2/3 innings and giving up three earned runs.

The Trojans get back on the diamond when they visit Columbia College on Sunday. First-pitch versus the Fighting Koalas is slated for 2 p.m.
